If you can’t wait for the next episode, try these.
This season’s Kaiju No. 8 (Kaijuu 8-gou) has definitely been a huge hit. The source material’s popularity definitely helps, but the anime is just a good mix of action and comedy.
There are many reasons why it’s so great, but if you like it, you can consider watching some of these, too.
Attack on Titan (2013–2023)
Where to watch: Crunchyroll
An anime about a protagonist who has to fight against giant monsters who terrorize humanity — after consuming the flesh of such a monster and gaining an ability to transform into it. Are we talking about Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) or Kaiju No. 8? The description certainly fits both.
There’s a reason why Attack on Titan is considered iconic. While it didn’t invent this premise, it popularized it, and it’s worth watching regardless of how controversial the ending was — some say it wasn’t even that bad.
Chainsaw Man (2022)
Where to watch: Crunchyroll, Hulu, Netflix
Another series that has the protagonist merged with an enemy of humanity to fight said enemies as a human-monster hybrid, Chainsaw Man is a grim series set in a world where humans are often killed by so-called Devils.
Denji, the main character, has to work thankless jobs before being saved from death by his pet dog Devil, Pochita. After that, he is enlisted into the Public Safety Corps.
Jujutsu Kaisen (2020–2023)
Where to watch: Crunchyroll, Netflix (starting May 2024), Hulu
Another very popular modern anime where the protagonist gains powers by eating something (fingers, in this case), Jujutsu Kaisen certainly differs in tone from Kaiju No. 8.
Still, it has impressive action, and its iconic status is absolutely deserved. Just don’t get too attached to the characters, because this one has a lot of deaths.
One Punch Man (2015–2019)
Where to watch: Netflix, Crunchyroll
If you want something that has kaiju specifically, while also retaining the crazy action and the urban fantasy setting, then One Punch Man is a perfect recommendation. It’s also a mix of action and comedy — although in One Punch Man, the comedy comes from the ridiculousness of the premise.
In both, the protagonists at first are jaded adult men, living in a city that regularly gets ravaged by giant monsters. While One Punch Man’s Saitama is clearly the strongest character in the series, he still lives like an ordinary humble person.
Dorohedoro (2020)
Where to watch: Netflix
Dorohedoro is different from the other series on this list. While it does have action (and a lot of comedy, too), that’s not its main focus.
The unique urban fantasy setting — centering on a bizarre underground city district called “The Hole” — makes it one of the most unusual anime out there. The protagonist also is an adult man who finds himself in the middle of action semi-willingly.
