Sidekicks can be a lot of things, from cute to scary and from comedic to tragic. Let's take a look at a few sidekicks from anime!
Our definition of a sidekick is someone who does not play a major character role but is consistently shown to be connected to someone who does.
5. Meowth to Team Rocket from Pokemon
Technically, any pokemon could be a sidekick, but Team Rocket's Meowth is just too memorable to ignore. Team Rocket always has Meowth with them, and he (along with the whole Team Rocket) make for a wonderful comedic relief. This is a comical sidekick example.
4. Calcifer to Howl from Howl's Moving Castle (Hauru no Ugoku Shiro)
Calcifer in Howl's Moving Castle is a cute sidekick with a few cards up his sleeve. He is a demon, and he powers the whole Moving Castle, and when given proper sacrifice, he becomes even more powerful than he already is. His history with Howl is not for us to spoil, but they know each other for quite a while, which makes Calcifer a great, loyal sidekick.
3. Nezuko to Tanjiro from Demon Slayer
Nezuko is loyal and strong in fighting her new demon abilities, as well as fighting demons themselves. It takes a while for her to become capable of it, during which Tanjiro takes care of her, but once she can, she protects her brother and is a good sidekick to him.
2. Luna to Sailor Moon in Sailor Moon (Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn)
Luna is the cat that got Sailor Moon to become a magical girl. She is very knowledgeable and brave, and she is also very cute and inconspicuous because she is a cat. A cat is a great sidekick for any Sailor Soldier (Venus gets one too).
1. Victoria Seras to Alucard in Hellsing/Hellsing Ultimate
Victoria Seras becomes a vampire in the first episode, with Alucard being her master – the one who turned her into a vampire. Victoria takes some time before she manages to accept her new life, but throughout it, she serves her master to the best of her ability. We would say that in 2001 Hellsing, she remains a sidekick forever. In Hellsing Ultimate she does get an arc, but it does not mean that she cannot be a sidekick with an arc.
Sidekicks appear in anime of different types (from action to fantasy), and they can be funny, cute or scary, but they are usually loyal, at least to some extent. It is fun to watch them make the anime a little more interesting.
