Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture Reveals New Key Visual, but There's Not Much Hype

Why does no one care anymore?

Summary:

  • Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture revealed a new key visual, but fans aren’t very excited.
  • It’s a pointless sequel — the original ending was good enough — and it will have a completely new cast.
  • The movie series will be released in May.

There was a time when Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch) was one of the most popular anime out there. It’s still considered a classic, although some fans don’t even know the series continues to release content to this day.

A new key visual for Rozé of the Recapture, or Dakkan no Rozé, has just been revealed. That is a new Code Geass project that is supposed to be set after the latest movie. Only, there’s practically no hype surrounding it.

It’s a Pointless Sequel

On paper, it seems weird. Shouldn’t otaku be hyped about a sequel to a beloved series? The answer, though, is not that simple, as sequels are not always good.

A part of what made Code Geass so iconic was the ending of the second season. At that point, the anime was fully complete: there was no source material in the first place, and the story fully concluded with its second season.

Code Geass never needed a sequel, yet it received multiple. While a lot of fans were not against it, they also didn’t really care about them as the anime already had a perfect conclusion.

What’s even worse is the fact that for Code Geass to get a sequel, the two seasons were remade into three movies which changed the iconic ending. That part upset the fans, although the Lelouch of the Re;surrection movie still had a decent reception because viewers wanted to see the cast again.

Further sequels, though, are considered unnecessary by the fans. Rozé of the Recapture is one of them, and there are indications that the anime will be continued even further.

The Anime Will Focus on a New Cast

As if being a pointless sequel was not enough, Rozé of the Recapture will also focus on an entirely new cast — even diehard fans of the franchise struggle to see any point in watching it.

One of the reasons the original series was so popular was the cast of characters, and now, apparently, we are getting none of them.

However, some fans speculate that Lelouch himself will at least make a cameo appearance. That was the case for Akito the Exiled movies, which are semi-canon spin-offs of the main series.

When Is It Coming Out?

Rozé of the Recapture movie will be shown in Japanese theaters as 4 movies, from May 10 to August 2 — which basically means a one-cour series turned into movies.

It will also be streamed by Disney+ and Hulu, so fans outside of Japan will be able to watch the anime very soon.
