The anime is compared to No Game No Life, and the comparison is not favorable.
Summary:
- Gods' Game We Play EP1 is out, and fans feel it is very generic.
- It gets compared to Liar Liar and No Game No Life, and it’s way worse than both.
- It doesn’t even look good.
The first episode of Gods' Game We Play (Kami wa Game ni Ueteiru) is already out. Technically, it has been out for a while — it was leaked via the same way as the first episode of KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!) S3.
Still, the leak was just a few days before the official release. Now the anime is on Crunchyroll, and fans can watch it legally. However, those who did don’t have many good things to say about it.
It’s Generic and Doesn’t Do Anything New
The original light novel is written by Kei Sazane, who’s also the author of Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World (Kimi to Boku no Saigo no Senjou, Aruiwa Sekai ga Hajimaru Seisen).
That anime, while somewhat generic, was decent and even had some amount of fans. Gods' Game We Play doesn’t seem to have any positive reception.
The first thing that fans noticed was how generic it actually is. They already had a suspicion it would be back when the key visual was revealed. The first episode certainly didn’t help, featuring a red-headed girl who tries to recruit an ordinary guy to win high-stake games.
That is very similar to the premise of Liar Liar from a few seasons ago, but the games themselves are similar to those of No Game No Life.
However, the anime itself is just… not that good. It doesn’t have the same kind of tension Liar Liar had, and it’s definitely not as fun and spectacular as NGNL was. In fact, many fans are disappointed we got it instead of NGNL Season 2.
It Doesn’t Even Look Good
The worst part, however, wasn’t even an incredibly generic premise and beginning. The visuals were very much below average, which furthermore upset the fans. With a generic premise that isn’t even well-executed and no good animation to speak of, there’s virtually zero reason to watch the anime.
The series is produced by studio LIDENFILMS, who has made a lot of anime in the past. Among them, there were some good looking ones, but some really disappointing ones as well.
It seems that Gods' Game We Play isn’t in the best place from the production standpoint, making it even less appealing. Perhaps you should skip this one and watch something better — there’s no lack of good anime this season.
