Grand Blue Might Be Getting Season 2 — Fans Didn't Expect It

They are very happy, though.

Summary:

  • According to a yet unconfirmed leak, Grand Blue is getting a second season.
  • Fans didn’t expect it, but they are still happy.
  • It won’t adapt the entire manga, and we don’t know when it will air.

Of all things to get a second season, Grand Blue was probably not on anyone’s list. The anime aired in 2018 and while it was decently received, there was nothing that indicated that it was ever going to receive a sequel.

However, according to a yet unconfirmed leak, the sequel for Grand Blue is currently in production. Fans are very much surprised by this development: the anime didn’t sell that well, and it’s surprising to see it receiving a sequel, especially so many years later.

What Is It About?

Grand Blue is an anime about diving — or, at least, that’s what it leads the viewer to believe at first. However, diving club members spend more time drinking and engaging in various stupid activities. Diving is only secondary — the anime is a fairly crude comedy, and it makes sense, given that the characters are college students.

Grand Blue was praised for its comedic aspect especially. There’s just something funny about seeing college students doing stupid things, after all.

Despite a generally warm reception in the West, Grand Blue wasn’t exactly popular in Japan. It didn’t bomb completely, but the sales were below average, and so, fans never expected another season to happen.

However, the manga was still selling really well. Fans weren’t even bothered by a lack of the second season, as the manga was still there and just as good — the anime was seen as a nice bonus to it.

Yet it seems that for some reason, the producers are bringing the anime back. Some fans believe it’s because the manga is slowly gearing towards the finale. As such, it’s a good time to remind people that the series exists.

Information We Know So Far

Still, fans can’t help but wonder how much the second season — if the leak is true — will even adapt. The first one adapted the first 5 volumes of the manga (21 chapters), and at this point, there’s more than 4x that number.

As such, while Grand Blue is indeed probably getting a second season (the leaker has been pretty consistently correct), it won’t adapt the manga to the end even if it airs for two cours (and many fans expect it to air for one).

It’s also unknown when the new season will air — but it’s definitely not happening in 2024. Some fans already hope for it to be released in Summer 2025, explaining that Grand Blue is a perfect summer anime, and the first season aired in Summer (of 2018) as well.
