Haikyuu!! fans have been waiting for any announcement regarding The Dumpster Battle movie. After all, it was released in Japanese theaters a while ago — but we still didn’t know when it was coming to Western theaters or legal streaming.
Now, Crunchyroll has finally announced the dates the movie is coming out internationally. Depending on your location, it will come to theaters as early as May 30 — which is sooner than some people may have expected.
What Is the Movie About?
Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle is the first movie in the Haikyuu!! Final project, which is going to have two movies in total. Initially, fans expected it to adapt the remainder of the Haikyuu!! manga, but by now, they firmly believe the movies will only cover the content before the timeskip.
The reason for that is there’s not enough runtime. Two movies won’t adapt the rest of the content, and there are two major games left before the timeskip — the first of which is between Karasuno and Nekoma, covered in The Dumpster Battle movie.
Fans were actually quite concerned about this adaptation in the first place. The match between Karasuno and Nekoma is about as long as the one between Karasuno and Shiratorizawa, at least in the manga.
That game was covered by an entire 10-episode season, which is twice as long as The Dumpster Battle movie. This change of pacing concerns the fans, and although the early reviews from Japanese screenings were mostly positive, they still want to see for themselves.
When Is It Coming to Streaming?
While we know the dates of the movie coming to international theaters — for the US, it’s May 31, for example — there’s still no information on legal streaming.
With Crunchyroll being responsible for the license, though, we can definitely expect it at some point — Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle is likely to become available on Crunchyroll later this year.
Fans Don’t Like Crunchyroll’s Wording
While fans are happy about the movie coming to theaters in the United States, Canada, most of Europe and Latin America, as well as some other territories, they aren’t satisfied with the announcement Crunchyroll put up.
The announcement clearly stated that the movie will be shown in “worldwide theaters.” A little more than 40 countries does not count as “worldwide,” and fans in many countries will have to wait for a legal streaming release.
