The anime project will adapt Inio Asano’s manga into a two-part movie.
The main characters will be played by ano and Lilas Ikuta.
The release date is still unknown.
Inio Asano is a mangaka known for his works in the psychological horror genre. Critically acclaimed for his realistic character writing, his works include such manga as Solanin and Goodnight Punpun (Oyasumi Punpun). It is no wonder his manga had always been considered unadaptable, as his art, themes and storytelling are very hard to properly convey in the anime form. That made the announcement of an anime adaptation for Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction last year even more surprising.
What is this about?
Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction (further referred to as Dededede, as the full title is a real mouthful) is a coming-of-age story of two girls, set during a one-sided war between humanity and (seemingly harmless) aliens. Dealing with mature and often quite grim topics, it just ended last year, and spans 101 chapters. With such a scale, it is quite interesting how the adaptation is going to work out, as only two full-length movies don’t seem like enough time to cover that much content. It is, however, worth looking forward to: the manga is amazing, and the studio’s other major work, The Orbital Children (Chikyuugai Shounen Shoujo) is a very good, if somewhat weird, story told in just 6 episodes.
Unusual cast choice
The most interesting part, however, is that with the revealed visual the project also announced the cast for the main duo. Kadode Koyama will be voiced by Lilas Ikuta (the vocalist of YOASOBI, one of the most popular bands providing their work for anime recently), while Ouran Nakagawa will be voiced by the singer ano, known to anime fans for her ending theme song to Chainsaw Man Episode 7. This casting is unexpected, although not unusual: anime movies occasionally cast singers and actors instead of professional seiyuu. There are concerns about it, however, as neither singer has much (if any) experience in voice acting.
When can we actually watch this?
With both movies currently scheduled for unspecified dates in 2024, it’s hard to speculate how far the production actually is, let alone how soon they will be available for viewing in some form in the West. This announcement only leaves one to wonder: if Dededede can get an adaptation, maybe Asano’s other manga can as well? Adaptations aren’t necessarily what source readers desire, but if anything, they can get the anime viewers interested in the author’s general body of work. Don’t sleep on this one, either.
The movie will be released in two parts.
