The movie, subtitled “Full Energy”, will release in 2024.
Summary:
A movie based on a seiyuu unit i☆Ris sounds like a weird project, but it’s less unusual than you might think.
i☆Ris are a group of seiyuu, who will play themselves in a movie, which seemingly belongs to the isekai genre.
The movie’s release is scheduled for 2024, and while fans in the West probably won’t care much about it, the Japanese audience is excited.
For many, an anime based on a seiyuu unit would sound like nonsense, and understandably so. However, this wouldn’t be the first precedent for real-life singers to get their own anime: one might remember the AKB0048 anime (based on an idol group AKB48) from the early 2010s, and these projects existed way before it as well. This, however, begs the question: what should an average fan that isn’t familiar with i☆Ris expect from the movie?
Who are i☆Ris and who is making the movie?
i☆Ris is a seiyuu unit consisting of Yuu Serizawa, Himika Akaneya, Miyu Kubota, Yuuki Wakai and Saki Yamakita. Originally created for the PriPara franchise, the unit used to include Azuki Shibuya, who graduated in 2021. The unit has performed songs outside of the franchise as well, including, for example, Twin Star Exorcists (Sousei no Onmyouji) and Wise Man's Grandchild (Kenja no Mago). The seiyuu will play themselves in the movie. The trailer features them being transported into a fantasy world through a portal, where they are met by a squirrel. It seems that they will perform in the other world, as indicated by the last scene shown.
The movie, subtitled “Full Energy”, is scheduled to release in Japanese theaters in 2024. The exact date is unknown. As for the staff, it is directed by Ikehata Hiroshi (Dark Gathering, Magical Destroyers) and produced by studio Gokumi. Hiroko Fukuda (responsible for Our Dating Story adaptation) is writing the script. The character designs are done by Kazuyuki Ueta (original character designer for BanG Dream!). The movie’s release is celebrating the group’s 10th anniversary.
Is it worth watching?
Despite being based on a seiyuu unit from PriPara, the movie will be completely standalone. It looks like a fun and colorful musical adventure story. Perhaps that’s not what most otaku would go out of their way to watch, but at least people who like idol anime (or music anime in general) should probably check it out.
With no date, however, it is unclear when the movie will be released in Japan, and the date of the Western release isn’t even possible to predict — if there even will be one. After all, this is not the type of content that Western otaku usually want, and it doesn’t always get licensed. Japanese fans, however, are very excited about it, praising the character and costume designs in the trailer, as well as voice acting and music.
