LEGO One Piece drops September 29, narrated by Usopp, and it's canon now
The convention crowd was handed mystery minifigure packs at the door and instructed to hold their Straw Hat aloft. That's how Netflix brought out Jacob Romero — the live-action Usopp — to present LEGO One Piece.
The special retells the East Blue arc from Usopp's perspective, which means Usopp is brave, bold and central to every event described, to the visible irritation of the rest of the crew. The live-action cast voices their own plastic counterparts, and the whole thing is framed as Usopp reading a story aloud to Chopper. The obvious comparison is The Princess Bride, and the special seems entirely aware of it.
The structural consequence, which I have not stopped thinking about: LEGO is now canonical to the live-action One Piece universe. A brick-built Going Merry exists inside the same continuity as Mackenyu's Zoro.
September 29. Netflix. The panel ended with a LEGO set giveaway; Romero joked that anyone who'd brought an infant would win one, and there were, in fact, infants in the room. One of those infants — well, one of those parents — now owns a LEGO One Piece set.
