Opening for Spice and Wolf Remake Has Fans Ready to Watch the Anime

Spoiler: they are still a little concerned.

Summary:

  • The Spice and Wolf remake revealed the opening sequence.
  • Fans like the song, although it’s still not as iconic as the original.
  • The CGI in the visuals is pretty disappointing.

While the first episode of the Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou) remake is yet to air, the production company has already posted the opening sequence on YouTube. This drew the attention of many fans: yes, bits of the opening could have been heard in one of the PVs, but this is the first time we’ve got the actual thing.

The trend of posting the opening/ending sequence without staff credits (usually referred to as “creditless” or “non-credit”) before the actual anime airs has actually been popular for a while. Normally, they usually were added on BD/DVD releases as extras, but in recent years, producers started uploading them straight to YouTube.

The new song is good

The creditless opening sequence for the Spice and Wolf remake was also released in advance — and fans were actually really interested in seeing this one. The original opening is one of the most iconic of all time, and it was really hard to beat or even match it.

There have already been theater prescreenings of the first 4 episodes in Japan, and those who went to them generally agreed that the new opening was good. However, to most fans, theater showings were unavailable.

Thankfully, the new opening is very good and keeps the spirit of Spice and Wolf perfectly. It might not match the original opening — to be fair, few songs can do that — but it’s still a great opening song, and fans are happy about it.

The visuals are somewhat disappointing

The visuals of the new opening are far more controversial, though. While the watercolor style and sequences are generally praised, the rest of the opening visuals are… not as great.

Fans noticed the amount of CGI in the new opening — more specifically, the CGI horses are hilariously bad. And this is considering the fact that in the original anime, horse animation wasn’t great, either. Fans are concerned about the new anime relying on CGI too much.

What else do we know?

While the remake opening generally satisfied Spice and Wolf fans, we are yet to see the ending sequence. It was also teased in one of the PVs, and fans hope it’s as catchy as the original one as well.

We still don’t know if the opening and the ending are going to change midway through the remake, though — that’s very possible, considering the anime will air for two consecutive cours, starting April 1.
