Sengoku Youko Reveals a New Trailer: Fans Are Very Excited

Are we finally getting a good Satoshi Mizukami adaptation?

Summary:

  • After Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer, fans have been concerned about the other announced adaptation of Satoshi Mizukami’s manga, Sengoku Youko.
  • However, a recently revealed trailer showcases good animation and music, putting the concerns to rest.
  • The anime will run for 37 episodes, making the project unusual in its own regard.

Fans have been asking for adaptations of Satoshi Mizukami’s works for years. When Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer (Hoshi no Samidare) aired last year, however, they were less than thrilled. It was understandable: putting pacing issues aside, the anime just looked painfully not good. With that, there was a lot of skepticism around an adaptation of Sengoku Youko — but after the trailer was revealed, many fans were excited once again.

Animation and sound seem to be on point

Being an adaptation of an action/adventure shounen manga about fighting supernatural entities, it was natural that the main requirement for a good adaptation would be good action. Studio White Fox is a fairly popular studio, but with some quality drop in Season 2 of Re:Zero (and another season being in production), fans were worried Sengoku Youko might get the short end of the stick. The concerns ended up being for nothing, however: at least in the trailer, the action seems to be very solidly animated.

Another thing that the fans are hyped for is the music. And in that regard, Sengoku Youko anime delivers as well: the composer for the soundtrack will be Evan Call, who has got quite a following in the West in recent years. His music spans across multiple genres, and there’s little doubt he can make the OST work. Moreover, the opening theme will be performed by MindaRyn (Arifureta S2, Shy), while the ending theme is composed by Yuki Kajiura (music for Sword Art Online, Fate/Zero, etc.) and performed by KEIKO (formerly a member of Kalafina). Good songs are incredibly important for shounen series, and it seems like Sengoku Youko is in safe hands in yet another aspect.

Another big thing is that the anime will run for 37 consecutive episodes. We barely see anime of such length in the 2020s — it’s all about being split into separate seasons nowadays. While that in itself is exciting and makes the project unique in its own regard (also virtually confirming it being a full adaptation), a few fans have voiced their concerns. There is some doubt about White Fox being able to pull off a production of an anime without having it fall apart in the middle. With no anime projects other than a Re:Zero sequel announced for 2024, however, they will probably be fine — although some otaku are wondering what is going to happen to Re:Zero at this pace.
