Episode 5
Episode 5 of Shy feels like a filler, but it is not boring filler; it feels like the filler in the original Sailor Moon (Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn) where characters got to know each other. Perhaps, the plot didn’t move during this episode, but Teru/Shy got closer with Piltz/Lady Black, and Shy learned to use her flames. That’s a good filler plot!
The episode also features a great reveal, which was completely unexpected. After a hike with Teru, Piltz shares that she has prosthetic legs. Despite it having nothing to do with Piltz being a tsundere, which is the trait fans love most about Piltz, learning about how she manages her disability has fans swooning over this brave girl.
A minor note is that Lady Black’s true name is Piltz Dunant, which is a nod to Henry Dunant, who co-established the Red Cross. With Lady Black being a part of the Black Cross, which serves a similar purpose to the Red Cross in the world of Shy, it seems like a good easter egg.
The Hike
Piltz agrees to see the older woman Teru knows and helps her with her back pain, after which the three of them go hiking. At the top of the mountain, Piltz reveals that both her legs are prosthetic, explaining that she hikes all the time to prove to herself that she can walk despite her disability.
Fans immediately realized what that meant for the characters. After all, Lady Black rarely shows any weaknesses. The fact that she allowed Teru to see her prostheses shows that the characters are getting closer, which gives fans hope that they can be friends. This is what a filler episode should look like!
