Spring 2024 Might Be the Best Anime Season in Recent Years, and Here's Why

And it’s not just because of the sequels.

Summary:

  • Some fans feel the Spring 2024 season is underwhelming.
  • We are getting many cool sequels and new projects.
  • It’s not underwhelming — in fact, it might be one of the best recently.

Compared to some of the previous seasons, Spring 2024 might not look that impressive. We don’t have big hits like Jujutsu Kaisen or Chainsaw Man. Even the popular series like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Frieren) and The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) are over.

At first glance, it might seem that the season doesn’t have many anime worth watching. The reality, however, is completely different. This might be one of the most anticipated seasons in a while, and definitely one that will be remembered.

Season of Hype Sequels

First of all, this is the season where we get all the sequels we’ve been waiting for for a while.

KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!), That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken), Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu) are all getting new seasons — these are the isekai series people actually like.

It’s not like we’re only getting sequels to the isekai series. Sound! Euphonium (Hibike! Euphonium) and Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) both needed sequels for years, and they’re finally getting more content.

Later in the season, we’ll also get sequels for My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia) and Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba). Despite the fact that they’re only starting in May, people are already speculating on them — and they’re both among the most popular shounen of recent time.

Non-Sequel Anime Worth Watching

It’s not like it’s only a season of sequels, though. We also got a remake of Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou), and, unlike it is with most remakes, fans actually like it. There are also adaptations of fairly successful works like Kaiju No. 8 (Kaijuu 8-gou), The Fable, and Viral Hit (Kenka Dokugaku).

While we haven’t been getting many anime originals, this season might actually change the trend.

Two of the original anime airing this season have already attracted some audience — fans are especially looking forward to Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night (Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai). And for Train to the End of the World (Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku?), the first episode is already out — and it’s so weird it’s incredible.

The Season Is Good

Overall, it’s definitely too early to dismiss the entire season. In fact, we’re getting so many great shows it might be among the best ones recently. Yes, we’ll have to wait for a while for some of them, but they will definitely be worth it.
