The Spice and Wolf Remake Hasn't Even Revealed Its Staff Yet, and That's Worrying Fans

Can this indicate production issues?

Summary:

  • The Spice and Wolf remake still hasn’t revealed any staff members outside of the director pair, the composer and the main seiyuu duo.
  • All these people have been revealed a long time ago, and we still don’t know anything else.
  • We’ll probably get the rest of the information during AnimeJapan 2024.

The Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou) remake is airing very soon. Of course, fans wonder if it will be as good as the original. They already had some concerns about the animation of the series. It probably won’t be bad, but it’s not going to have the same vibe as the original.

That said, we know surprisingly little about the anime outside of some key staff members. We know the pair of director and chief director — Hijiri Sanpei and Takeo Takahashi. The latter was the director for the original series, and the former worked with him on multiple occasions.

We barely know anything about the rest of the staff, though — and that’s concerning.

We know the directors, the composer, and the main VAs…

Well, it’s not like we only know people who are responsible for the general direction of the series. We know that the anime will be animated by Passione, which seems to be Takahashi’s studio of choice — considering he worked on Citrus back in 2018 and is involved as a chief director with Ishura, which is airing right now.

We also know the composer for the anime. Kevin Penkin, who previously worked on soundtracks for Made in Abyss and Tower of God (Kami no Tou), among others, is also working on the Spice and Wolf remake.

Of course, one of the most important parts is the cast — and here specifically, it’s the seiyuu behind the main duo. However, this part we’ve known for a while now — Ami Koshimizu and Jun Fukuyama are returning to voice Holo and Lawrence. They were the voice actors for them in the original series as well.

…but we don’t know anyone else

Outside of that, though, we have no idea who is even working on the anime. We’ve seen the new character designs, but the person behind them is not disclosed yet. There’s no info on who is adapting the script for the new anime either, which is perhaps the most concerning part.

And yes, we know the voice actors behind the main duo, but not the rest of the characters. Arguably, that’s not as important, but there’s a clear trend: all the aforementioned staff and cast members were revealed a long time ago, and since then, we got nothing.

It will be revealed soon

It’s almost certain that the rest of the staff and cast — along with the theme songs — will be revealed during AnimeJapan 2024, which is happening on March 23 and 24. There’s probably no reason to be worried, but keeping the information about key staff of the anime secret is not something fans were going to like.
