Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a prequel that was released after the first season. This isn't the first time that studios have gone this route and released a feature-length movie after the first part of the story in a series format.
First there was Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train (Kimetsu no Yaiba Movie: Mugen Ressha-hen), and this year there will be Chainsaw Man the Movie: Reze Arc (Chainsaw Man Movie: Reze-hen).
However, there are viewers who are skeptical about the movie format for some reason. Jujutsu Kaisen fans still can't decide if a feature-length film is that important to the universe.
Part of the story
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 does not feature the three main characters around whom the events of the first season unfolded. It focuses on another character who appears in the universe for the first time. Yuta Okkotsu is another student at Tokyo Jujutsu High who is rescued by Gojo (just like Yuji) and invited to study.
There are several interesting aspects to Yuta's story. First of all, it reveals the second year students, including Toge, Maki and Panda. Another missing element in the series, which looks better in the movie, is the school life of the students.
Most valuable for the universe, however, is the only love line shown in Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Of course, there is a Miwa and Mechamaru related story in the second season, but it is not given much time.
The story of Yuta and Rika, on the other hand, is almost the centerpiece of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and looks very unusual, since the girl is a cursed ghost and Yuta is definitely not the kind of character you'd expect to have a love story.
Actually extremely important
Despite all the subplots, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is also important to the main plot, because the main villain of the movie is Geto. The events of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 take place after Hidden Inventory, when Geto was just beginning his journey to the dark side.
The movie shows the end of his path — Yuta becomes the one who fatally wounds Geto. Gojo has to kill him in the end. Without seeing Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Gojo's shock during his capture in Shibuya is incomprehensible.
Furthermore, Yuta is a very important character for the plot. Although he only appeared in the series at the end of the second season, Yuta has been mentioned many times before.
He is a very powerful sorcerer, comparable in power to Gojo, and will be one of the main characters in the Culling Game Arc. Without Jujutsu Kaisen 0, it's hard to understand who this character is and how important he is to the plot.
