The power levels are not as straightforward as you might think.
As the third season of Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu) airs in October, fans’ attention is focused on the series again. One of the most frequently asked questions is “who is the strongest character in the series?”. The answer isn’t that simple.
Here's the top 10 strongest characters who have appeared in the first two anime so far. The novels have some characters who would have made the top as well, but we haven’t seen them yet.
Oh, and Subaru isn’t on it, since his direct combat abilities are very low — but with enough returns, he can probably defeat anybody.
10. Typhon
The innocent-looking Witch of Pride possesses a terrifying power. Typhon can sense whether someone is “bad” or “good”, and then use that power to shatter them into pieces instantly — assuming they feel any kind of guilt or regret.
The only consolation is that “good” people don’t feel pain from that. This power also works on anyone who hits her.
9. Lye Batenkaitos
Lye Batenkaitos is the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony. He’s been shown to be absolutely insane — and terrifying at the same time. Possessing superhuman speed and strength, he could carve through an armed convoy in mere seconds, but his Authority is way scarier.
He possesses the same abilities the White Whale did — which makes sense, considering the Whale has been his pet, and he says he could create a new one. He’s able to eat people’s names — erasing others’ memories of them — and identities — erasing their own memories.
8. Roswaal
Roswaal L Mathers is way older than he looks. He is actually a very old mage inhabiting the bodies of his descendants — over the years, he became one of the strongest mages of all time.
He can use all six elements, which is normally unheard for humans — and he perfected his use of them.
7. Hector
Yeah, you may ask “who?” — Hector isn’t exactly a character that showed up a lot. He only appeared in Roswaal’s flashbacks, where he effortlessly defeated him.
While his exact powers are unknown, he’s a Warlock of Melancholy — a title similar to that of the Witches — and we can assume he is very strong.
6. Puck
Despite taking the form of a cute cat-like creature most of the time, Puck is actually one of the Four Great Spirits. Created by Echidna to assist and protect Emilia, he acts as a familiar and a guardian — until Emilia is in danger.
In the first season, when Emilia dies, Puck goes berserk and tries to destroy the world, killing Subaru in the process (and making all of this not happen). It was later stated that in that timeline, Reinhard had to stop him.
5. Sekhmet
It’s officially stated that of the Seven Witches of Sin, Sekhmet, the Witch of Sloth, is the strongest of them. She can seemingly crush anyone with a simple thought.
This is assumed to be a similar power to that of Unseen Hand of Petelgeuse in Season 1, although far greater in strength. Echidna mentioned that Sekhmet could defeat the other witches (outside of Satella) nearly instantly.
4. Regulus
It’s hard to talk about the abilities of Regulus without spoiling much. Being the Witch Cult Archbishop of Greed, Regulus Corneas has held this position for many years. Seemingly unaging (and perhaps immortal), he possesses currently unexplained abilities that make him seemingly immune to physical attacks.
As if that wasn’t enough, he also has an ability that allows him to form some sort of barriers instantly, shattering anything and anyone into pieces. The nasty personality definitely doesn’t help.
Honorable mention: Ram
Okay, as is, Ram is strong, but not especially overpowered when it comes to combat. However, both the author and the fandom often consider a theoretical “Ram who never lost her horn” one of the strongest characters in the series.
If that were actually a thing, Subaru would have had a powerful ally — however, it’s mostly a “what if?” angle.
3. Pandora
Pandora is an enigmatic personality who holds a very high position in the Witch Cult. She’s a Witch of Vainglory (not a part of the Seven Witches), and her powers are seemingly limitless — there have to be some limitations, but we currently don’t know them.
Perhaps the best show of power we’ve seen from her was when she rewrote reality multiple times in Season 2, which included canceling her own death and changing the past to make Regulus not go with her — simply because she could.
2. Satella
It’s unknown exactly how strong Satella, the Witch of Envy, is. However, she was responsible for the Great Calamity 400 years ago, and it took many very strong individuals to defeat her. Yes, defeat and seal — because she could not be killed at all.
Despite being sealed, she still continues to affect the plot, and it’s believed she’s responsible for Subaru’s Return by Death ability. While the exact circumstances of what happened 400 years ago are yet unknown, it’s been stated by the author that Satella is the strongest character in the series outside of Reinhard.
1. Reinhard
It’s been stated multiple times that the current Sword Saint, Reinhard van Astrea, is by far the strongest character in the entire franchise. That said, most of the Re:Zero plot can’t be solved by brute force, but Reinhard is still a very powerful ally for Subaru.
He has never shown his full power in the anime, but the short specials for the first season listed some of his Divine Blessings. Yes, he has many, and can get many more if the situation demands — and the ones he already has make him an invulnerable fighter with god-tier powers.
