This season, however, has Train to the End of the World (Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku?), which outdid many series in its weirdness. In fact, fans are pointing out that it is so bizarre in its setup and themes that it might be one of the strangest anime out there, ever — and definitely the strangest one in 2024.
Insane Premise
Essentially, the anime plays off the idea of 5G conspiracies. In its world, people have invented 7G — which, apparently, broke the laws of physics, made it into a surreal nightmare and turned people into animals. In that post-apocalyptic, barely functioning world, a group of girls departs on a journey.
This premise, to put it bluntly, is completely insane. Talking animals, visual imagery mixing abstract art and zombie apocalypse tropes, trains, and the talk about technologies and energy waves — it feels like the anime really has everything. There’s no guessing where it will go from now, and fans are excited to see more episodes.
Famous Staff
The anime is written by Michiko Yokote — she is responsible for scripts for many anime adaptations, but hardly any originals. The director, though, is Tsutomu Mizushima — whose name might be familiar to more experienced otaku. He directed anime like Shirobako,
Girls & Panzer, and Another, and has actually worked with Yokote before.
As such, some have been looking for this release for a while. Still, they were surprised by how crazy it actually was.
Concerns About Animation
Another thing many fans noticed is how good the anime looks. With Mizushima on board, that was somewhat expected — granted, studio EMT Squared is not exactly known for top-tier productions.
Others, however, are not so optimistic about the visuals. Mizushima posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account that the fourth episode isn’t even done yet — indicating potential scheduling issues. Some fans are worried about the anime, while others point out that it’s a fairly normal practice for modern series.
