It's impossible not to empathize.

Summary:

  • The main characters in Haikyuu!! are examples of good protagonists.
  • The characters don't change at the snap of a finger.
  • Their constant rivalry with each other adds to the viewing experience.

What makes a good sports anime? Spectacular and action-packed matches, of course. An exciting plot is also important. But the protagonists play an equally significant role. It is much more interesting to follow characters with unusual personalities that develop and reveal themselves as the story progresses.

The story revolves around Shouyou Hinata's dream of becoming a good volleyball player who can compare with his idol "Little Giant". When he was younger, he saw this outstanding player's game and was inspired by his experience. Shouyou even formed his own team and entered the competition.

But there is a big challenge on the way to his dream — he is small in stature, and in volleyball, height is everything. That doesn't stop Shouyou, because "Little Giant" is also a short-statured player.

However, Shouyou's setback came in his first official tournament. With an improvised team, he faced Tobio Kageyama and failed miserably. But nothing can stop our hero! At the new school, he joins the team his hero once played for. Ironically, Kageyama also became a player for this team. Although his story is different from Shouyou's.

Kageyama is considered to be a very talented player, but he can't succeed in volleyball either. Mainly because of his difficult character, which doesn't allow him to get along with his teammates. Can Shouyou and Kageyama achieve their goals together? The plot sounds really interesting!

Almost all the characters inHaikyuu!!’s are well written — not only the main characters and their Karasuno teammates, but also players from other teams. However, the stories of the protagonists — Shouyou and Kageyama — are given considerably more time. Their personalities and abilities undergo significant changes. Shouyou grows from a player who just loves volleyball and wants to play it any way he can to a conscious athlete who knows what he's doing and helps the team. Kageyama stops being arrogant and demanding and does everything in his power to help his friends.

The story of former rivals and current allies, as well as the story of a not-so-capable and talented player, is not new to the sports genre. In Haikyuu!!, however, these tropes are played out very well. The characters don't change at the snap of a finger, even in the 4th season they still face challenges and trials.

By the way, the match against Inarizaki was the first time Shouyou managed to receive a serve. Their constant rivalry with each other and with other strong players adds to the viewing experience. All in all, it's impossible to take your eyes off their game.
