What's The Real Reason Behind Shy Hiding Her Identity?

Shy's not just her name, it's a lifestyle.

Shy is an anime about superheroes. In Shy's world superheroes help prevent wars, and each country is represented by a superhero. Shy is from Japan. While the British hero, Stardust, has disclosed his identity, other heroes have not. Let's take a look at Shy's reason for hiding her identity from everyone.

Major spoilers ahead!

The anime is ongoing, so if you want a story about a very shy superhero, watch the three episodes before you come back for our analysis.

Shy, whose real name is Teru, ended up disclosing her heroic self to a friend, Iko, because Iko got possessed by a ring that a strange boy (and clearly an antagonist) put on her finger. Shy helped Iko, and that is why Iko is now the only non-hero who knows about her identity. As a fourteen-year-old girl, Teru has not even told her parents; only other heroes know who Teru/Shy is.

To be fair, most heroes have not disclosed their non-heroic identities. Only the rock star Davie Wonder John, who is called Stardust by other heroes, decided to tell the world who he is. Shy is not quite so bold, which makes sense for a shy fourteen year old.

Teru is just too shy to be openly herself, and that is fine. It is also possibly safer than what Davie Wonder is doing, given that Teru has her family to worry about. But why not tell her family and maybe a friend or two?

It seems like Teru does not really have friends, being a shut-in, even though now she has Iko. But when asked why her family does not know, Teru admits that Shy's outfit makes her, well, shy. It is a one-piece suit that does not have pants or skirt to cover Teru's legs, and Teru is certain that her parents would not approve of that outfit.

This is a hilarious reason, but it is very Shy-like. Shy does not mention that disclosing her identity publicly would also endanger people since her real persona might attract danger, especially toward her friends. It might not be a reason because it seems to be already too late. The strange boy, who gave Iko the ring, did not just choose her accidentally. He seemed to know that she was Toru's friend and that Toru was Shy. After all, the other known victim of the ring was a friend of Davie Wonder. While the boy would know who Davie is, it appears strange that he would also know who Shy is. It looks like her identity is not a secret to those who really need to know how to get to her.

In other words, while Teru has her reasons to hide who she is, the people who wish to cause her trouble already know everything they need about Shy.
