Why Berserk of Gluttony Keeps Fans Cringing

Can the main character stop talking to his sword in public?

Berserk of Gluttony (Bōshoku no Beruseruku Ore dake Reberu to Iu Gainen wo Toppa suru) is a very interesting anime. In it, people have god-given talents (or skills), and they can level up, usually by killing other creatures. It is a roleplaying game in a fantasy setting, and it is a lot of fun.

We will spoil quite a lot about it, so please beware spoilers!

The anime is ongoing, and at this point, only three episodes are out, so you can watch them and come back to rant with us.

The main character of the anime, Fate, appears to have received only a useless skill, which is gluttony. Soon, though, he learns that the skill is much stronger than it seems on the surface. You see, Fate is not hungry for food, although it can help for a while; what he is actually hungry for is souls, and when he accidentally kills a thief, he absorbs their abilities.

As he soon learns, the skill requires hunting and feasting on souls; otherwise, he might lose control and kill someone he did not mean to kill. That is something he learns from his sword, which he finds on sale, and which speaks to him, constantly, both about serious things and completely unimportant ones. The sword is called Greed because Greed is the skill it has, which makes him and Fate a good combination.

The fact that Greed talks all the time is fine. It can be a bit of a comic relief, and it does give Fate a lot of good advice, which gets him out of complicated situations. The problem is not Greed; it is Fate.

No, Seriously: This Is Getting Old Real Fast

It is not entirely clear how the sword talks to Fate, but it does so unnoticeably. Nobody but Fate can hear it. However, Fate has not learned not to talk to his own sword while in public. It does create humorous situations at times, but most of the time, it just makes Fate look like he is not very smart. Even if he does not have the ability to communicate with the sword telepathically, Greed would understand it if Fate did not answer for once.

Unfortunately, this element of the anime is not very funny, but it plagues the series, resulting in constant misunderstandings between Fate and people around him. Let us hope that Fate learns to only talk to his sword in private, especially since Greed does seem to have a lot of wisdom to impart.
