3 Reasons Why You Should Watch The Ancient Magus' Bride

The second season seems to be slept on, but it is so worth watching!

The Ancient Magus’ Bride (Mahou Tsukai no Yome) spoilers ahead!

The Ancient Magus’ Bride has a strange and almost off-putting premise, but once you get past that, you will have a lot of fun. Here are our top three reasons to watch The Ancient Magus’ Bride.

1. The Anime Does Not Have the Objectively Negative Features You Think It Has

The premise of the anime is that a strange being (we still do not know exactly what Elias is) buys a girl with magical powers at an auction and tells her that he wants her to be his apprentice and bride. The girl, Chise, is fifteen at the time. Yuck.

The anime takes its sweet time to actually spell out that Elias does not understand human relationships and thinks that a bride and a wife is someone you share your life with. He did not mean to be a creep, but he ended up being one because Chise does know what a bride is.

In any case, there is one instance of Elias being extremely creepy, when he gives Chise a bath. After another human, who Elias trusts, explains things to him — with enough yelling, we assure you — the relationship between Elias and Chise is actually quite wholesome. It is a steady, comfortable background to crazy things happening all around them because Chise cannot help but get in trouble.

2. Chise’s Characterization is Great

Especially in the second season, Chise is a proactive protagonist, which is very nice to observe. She has a little too much courage and acts before she thinks. However, her character is very consistent, and her kindness and bravery help her solve problems about as much as they get her into trouble.

In Season 2, Chise also gets rid of the constant magical exhaustion that held her back in the first season. She becomes even more active and strong despite — and occasionally thanks to — the two curses she acquired in the first season.

3. The Worldbuilding is Amazing

The anime slowly, one piece at a time, gives you information about the world of The Ancient Magus’ Bride. It takes a lot from celtic and nordic mythologies, but it usually tweaks things depending on what the anime needs.

For example, Chise is a Sleigh Beggy. In Manx and Welsh mythologies, those are fairies. In The Ancient Magus’ Bride, Sleigh Beggies are a type of human who attract a lot of magical energy and magical creatures. As a result, they are very valuable, but their human bodies cannot handle all the magic going through them, leaving them with shortened lives. This way, the anime uses existing mythologies and weaves them into the narrative. When you watch The Ancient Magus’ Bride, you will encounter a lot of interesting magical creatures, from ancient gods to church grims and more!

The Ancient Magus’ Bride has an engaging story, a well thought-out world, and great characters while also leaving creepiness to the occasional monster. It is a great anime to pick up if you have the time for it.
