5 Anime Characters Who Totally Steal the Show Even Though They’re Not Protagonists

Sometimes, the ones you remember are not the ones the story was actually about.

Spoilers ahead!

Often, the first character that comes to mind when someone mentions the show is obviously one of the show’s protagonists. Sometimes, however, other characters are much more memorable — not because the protagonists are boring, but because they are just so fun to watch. Here are some examples.

Satoru Gojo (Jujutsu Kaisen)

One of the best recent examples is Satoru, who is so popular you’d probably think he’s the protagonist (if you didn’t watch the show). While undoubtedly being a part of the main cast and an essential character to the series, the blindfolded sorcerer (considered to be the strongest in the world) takes the role of the protagonist’s mentor instead. Known for his carefree attitude, as well as being one of the most memorable characters of the series based on the design alone, he is definitely the show’s most beloved character, to the point where he can be seen on a lot of the promotional material. Hey, maybe that’s where the confusion comes from.

Kamina (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)

Another case of “if you didn’t know better, you’d think the show was about him”. Kamina’s trademark glasses are one of the iconic symbols of the show, and his fiery behavior set the mood for the series. And yes, he is one of the protagonists, technically — at least until his untimely death in Episode 8. After that, the sole protagonist is Simon.

Levi Ackerman (Attack on Titan)

While in the latter seasons characters like Eren gradually got more love, in Season 1 of AoT the protagonist trio arguably was not interesting enough to a casual viewer. Levi, however, was, with his eccentric and quirky behavior. Add him being incredibly cool to the boot, and his popularity makes perfect sense.

Dazai (Bungo Stray Dogs)

Sure, Atsushi is the protagonist of BSD, but it’s very easy to forget that, especially with how much more fun Dazai is. Both his ability, No Longer Human, and he himself are more flashy than Atsushi himself, and his interactions with the rest of the cast are top-notch. It is no surprise that he is the fan favorite, but interestingly enough, many characters in BSD are more memorable than Atsushi — not that Atsushi is a bad character, of course.

Askeladd (Vinland Saga)

In Season 1 of Vinland Saga, Askeladd, the target of Thorfinn’s revenge, is way more fun to watch than Thorfinn himself. Ambitious, charismatic and yet somehow very level-headed when needed, he undoubtedly is more interesting than the actual protagonist of the show. He gets what he deserves, however, but that is the perfect end for him, only adding to his character.
