5 Anime Similar to Spice and Wolf & Where to Watch Them

If the remake is not enough for you.

Watching the Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou) remake weekly might be hard. Waiting a week for another episode isn’t something most fans are happy about, and, if you’re already familiar with both the original and the remake, why not watch some similar series?

Maoyu

Maoyu (Maoyuu Maou Yuusha) has jokingly been called “Spice and Wolf season 2.5” since it started airing. Think about it: it’s a fantasy series about two beings belonging to different species slowly falling in love with each other… and it also features fantasy economics.

As if that wasn’t enough, it’s directed by Takeo Takahashi — who directed Spice and Wolf — and has the exact same duo of seiyuu for the protagonists. Despite that, it’s actually fairly different in execution. Depending on where you are, it might be on Crunchyroll, Netflix or HIDIVE.

Frieren

While Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Frieren) isn’t a romance series, nor does it involve much economics, it still more often than not has the same tone as Spice and Wolf does.

Especially in its first half, Frieren is a melancholic travel adventure series, following a cast of characters moving North for a very sentimental reason. Frieren is available on Crunchyroll, and it’s coming to Netflix as well very soon.

Log Horizon

If you enjoy the “fantasy world economics” aspect of Spice and Wolf, you can watch Log Horizon. Despite being a “stuck in the game” series, there’s no real risk of death, so the characters just hang out.

The anime puts a surprising amount of emphasis on economics and politics, and is a nice change of pace from your usual isekai series — definitely check it out — all three seasons are on Crunchyroll.

Katanagatari

Katanagatari is another fantasy romance anime where most of the story is moved through dialogue. Yes, there is action, and it’s really good — however, it’s still mostly a dialogue-based series. The dynamic between the main duo is somewhat similar to that between Holo and Lawrence from Spice and Wolf at times.

The only issue with Katanagatari is that it is somewhat hard to watch legally. The only way to watch it without piracy would be to buy the official Blu-Rays, if you’re in the US. In some other countries, including Japan, it’s on Prime Video.

Ascendance of a Bookworm

Another recommendation for fantasy world economics fans, Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame ni wa Shudan wo Erandeiraremasen) is closer to a traditional isekai, specifically, the reincarnation subtype.

Still, the anime provides a very realistic take on economics in a fantasy world and building your own fortune. Myne utilizes her knowledge to pursue the one passion she had before getting isekai’d: reading books. The entire anime is on Crunchyroll, and, in some locations, the first season is on Netflix.
