5 Anime That Are So Insane They Just Wouldn't Have Worked if They Were Live-Action

Some of these we’d actually like to see — but they’re impossible for one reason or another.

It seems that more and more anime are getting live-action adaptations nowadays. Some even got multiple over the years — like Death Note, for example. If you look at a larger picture, however, only the most successful franchises get that treatment. Most anime actually don’t have live-action counterparts; a lot are simply not popular enough, but some are — yet also are completely impossible to adapt.

Gurren Lagann

Many mecha anime probably wouldn’t work well in live-action form. In general, the genre is mostly unique to the anime medium, with most of the world actually not caring about it. What makes Gurren Lagann stand out here, however, is the fact that it’s absolutely crazy and over-the-top. The series hypes itself and the viewer to the point it’s completely impossible to recreate such hype in a live-action movie or series. Sad, but such is life.

FLCL

FLCL is weird. It’s often considered a classic, and it is basically a coming-of-age story if you dissect it; however, the plot is bizarre, to say the least. In short, a bike-riding woman claiming to be an alien runs over a teen and then hits him in the head with a guitar, and then robots start growing out of the teen’s head… yeah. It’s full of symbolism and imagery that only work in the anime medium — trying to turn it into something else would be a pointless task.

Lucky Star

Lucky Star isn’t very insane per se. What it does, however, is quite unique to the anime medium — and probably would be incredibly boring to watch as a live-action movie or series. It is, first and foremost, a reference-based comedy that talks about otaku and their hobby. As such, it’s full of meta jokes and sketches that only make sense in anime — especially when it is parodying other series. As a live-action, those would be just confusing, and the audience probably wouldn’t care about the subject at hand.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

Most studio Shaft anime won’t do well as live-action — they very often rely on visual gags and unique direction the studio has. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei might just be the hardest one to turn into live-action, however: like Monogatari, it’s essentially just people talking (and the dialogue is often filled with puns and obscure references).

What makes it even harder to turn into live-action, however, is the fact that it’s filled with extremely dark humor, something that’s alright in manga and anime — but with the protagonist attempting suicide in the very first minutes, this definitely won’t sit well with many viewers.

Fate series

Fate isn’t really insane on its own. Yes, some of its spinoffs are weirder than others (notably, the Fate/Extra: Last Encore anime is a sequel to a bad ending of the game), but many technically could work as live-action series. What makes Fate impossible to adapt, however, is how large and seemingly convoluted the franchise is — yes, it makes sense if you look into it, but many live-action series are made with a completely new audience in mind.

Even Fate/Zero assumes you have some basic knowledge of the franchise’s premise: new viewers would be confused by any possible standalone adaptation of Fate into a live-action series or movie, and so it is completely impossible to make one.
