Classroom of the Elite (Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e) is a somewhat controversial anime. Yes, the protagonist is very obviously a psychopath — but we can’t help but find him entertaining to watch, especially when he outsmarts his enemies.
That said, if you want something like that — or just want to see similar social commentary — these are some anime for you!
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU
Hachiman of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru), or Oregairu, might be considered a tamer version of Ayanokouji of Classroom of the Elite.
Both characters consider social norms useless and stupid. The difference is that Oregairu is primarily a romcom. Hachiman grows out of that mindset eventually, but he remains quite cynical.
On the other side of the spectrum we have Tomodachi Game. High-stakes game anime like this often require characters to betray others to survive.
Similarly to Ayanokouji, Yuuichi Katagiri is cold, ruthless and manipulative, outsmarting his enemies at every step. In some ways, he’s even more cruel — which is expected, given the nature of the anime.
Kakegurui doesn’t really have a cold, calculating protagonist. Yes, Yumeko is very smart, but that mostly extends to the games the characters play — she often gets very excited about them. That said, she still outsmarts her opponents.
A very notable similarity between Kakegurui and Classroom of the Elite is the setting. A high school with its own rules, laws and social hierarchy, where human rights are considered guidelines and everyone can be an enemy? Yeah, this applies to both of these shows.
Another psychological thriller set in a high school, Talentless Nana (Munou na Nana) also features a very smart protagonist who outsmarts her enemies.
We can’t really say much more about it, though: anything else would spoil the series, and a lot of what makes it so good relies on plot twists and sudden reveals.
The Irregular at Magic High School
The protagonist of The Irregular at Magic High School (Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei), Tatsuya Shiba, may be seen as emotionless — but it’s not like he’s some kind of people-hating person. No, he’s just that cool — despite being sorted into a lower quality, or “weed” class, he’s actually talented — his magic just manifests differently.
What makes the anime similar to Classroom of the Elite is not the protagonist, however. Rather, it is the commentary on the social hierarchy and how people might keep up appearances to hide their true talents.
Of course, you can also read the light novels.
