5 Anime Where Any Character Can Die (and Yes, Attack on Titan is on the List)

Sometimes there’s just too much plot armor in anime.

Spoilers ahead!

Are you tired of action series where all the characters always make it out alive, despite the fights being brutal and the weapons and/or abilities used being fatal? Want something darker and more realistic, where no characters — including the protagonists — are safe from death or grave injury? Look no further than this list of 5 anime where any character may (and often will) die!

Attack on Titan

The obvious recommendation here, Attack on Titan showcases in its very first episodes how cruel and unforgiving its world really is. Its cast is huge, but with everyone being in constant danger, fighting for their survival, people will die — not even the fan favorites will be spared. While the series drifts away from its initial premise (100% on purpose — most of it was foreshadowed very early), the cold, hard realism never stops, and not even fan favorites are safe.

Jujutsu Kaisen

The latest arc of Jujutsu Kaisen anime proved that Gege Akutami is not above killing off many of the series’ characters. It’s understandable: the world of jujutsu sorcerers doesn’t forgive mistakes, and any hopes that the series will remain light-hearted were shattered back in the first season. Despite that, the deaths in the series actually feel meaningful, which only adds tension to the anime.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

This goes for any part, really. If you’re watching JoJo’s, chances are, some of your favorites are going to die. With the franchise’s villains often possessing ridiculously strong abilities, needing continuous efforts and teamwork from the cast to overcome them, it’s obvious that some of the main characters are not going to make it. Despite that, however, the deaths in JoJo are all memorable in their own ways: almost every character on the side of the “good guys” goes out in an honorable way.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Edgerunners is set in a dystopian futuristic world. As such, it would be naive to think that the life there is all happiness and flowers. This goes even more obvious when the plot of the anime is a fight against the system itself — and the system will try to destroy everyone who tries to oppose it. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will keep you on the tip of your toes for its entire run, but don’t expect many characters to make it out alive.

Akame ga Kill!

Suggestion of a fun mini-game: sit down with friends and, when a character gets introduced in Akame ga Kill!, bet on when they are going to die. Yes, “when”, not “if” — because guessing “yes” for “is this person going to die?” will almost always be correct. Despite its reputation of killing almost the entirety of its cast, Akame is surprisingly entertaining — which can partly be attributed to crazy action, weapons and powers in the series. A lot of deaths are ridiculous if you look back at them, but they will more often than not shock you when you are watching the anime.
