Otaku culture is central to anime, so it comes as no surprise that there are anime about otaku.
My Dress-Up Darling
In My Dress-Up Darling, we see the main character, Wakana Gojo, getting help and support from an otaku girl, Marin Kitagawa. Together with Wakana Gojo, they figure out how to do cosplay, while Wakana Gojo learns how to be confident and embraces his passion for crafting.
In Wotakoi, two otaku are a really good fit for each other, and the story is dedicated to them understanding it. The female lead is actually a fujoshi, the type of otaku who likes romance stories where two men are the characters in love. The male lead is an otaku who likes games. It is a very funny romcom, and with two otaku (or even more) being in love, so it absolutely deserves to be on this list.
Maid-sama!
Misaki, the female protagonist, works at a Maid Cafe, which naturally means a lot of otaku in the vicinity. She is also the first female student to be the president of a school council that only recently allowed in girls. It used to be an all-boys school, and the boys remain pretty rowdy. Misaki does her best for the school and the girls in it, but when her secret of being employed at a Maid Cafe is discovered by a schoolmate Takumi Usui, her reputation is in danger. Maid-sama! is a fun romantic comedy with a lot of otaku culture.
I Can’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying
I Can’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying is a very short, very sweet romantic comedy where being an otaku might occasionally cause misunderstandings, but not to the point of breaking up. Two seasons of 3-minute episodes show how an otaku husband lives with a non-otaku wife. They get into all sorts of funny situations, but in the end, they love each other and stay together.
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid
In Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, an otaku is a side character. The series is a comedy about Miss Kobayashi, who is a programmer and who, after a night of drinking, helped a dragon. As a result, she now has a dragon maid. The otaku side character is a friend of Miss Kobayashi, Makoto Takiya, who believes that Miss Kobayashi is also into anime and maids. Miss Kobayashi doesn’t seem to actually consider herself an otaku, but she does help Makoto with his comics markets.
Anime about otaku are not very common, but the ones that do exist deserve our appreciation.
