5 Best Anime About Police & Where to Watch Them

More importantly, the civil servants in these are the good guys.

Have you ever wondered why there are so few anime about police? The answer is — there are actually many, but most of them are quite old and unavailable to watch legally. Thankfully, if you’re interested in the topic, here’s 5 series focusing on police that you can actually watch in the US.

Cop Craft

Where to watch: Crunchyroll, Prime

Here, it’s all in the name, really. Cop Craft takes place in a universe where a portal was opened in the Pacific Ocean, connecting Earth to a fantasy world. Of course, chaos ensued at first, but now, the law is more or less upheld. The protagonists keep watch over the city of San-Teresa, where the fantasy world inhabitants reside.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Where to watch: Adult Swim’s website

Of multiple Ghost in the Shell (Koukaku Kidoutai) continuities, the one that focuses the most on the classic “law and order” formula is definitely Stand Alone Complex.

The series has 2 seasons (and some additional specials/movies), and in these two, we see a lot of speculation how crime could have evolved in a cyberpunk society. It’s considered a classic for a reason.

Chainsaw Man

Where to watch: Crunchyroll

Does the Public Safety Bureau count as police? There are arguments for both sides, but think about it this way. In Chainsaw Man, the protagonists protect innocent people and defend the society from the Devils. Yes, Devils are technically supernatural threats — but the way the Bureau operates is very similar to that of actual police.

Hellsing

Where to watch: Crunchyroll (both the original series and Ultimate)

Hellsing is the name of a police organization in Britain that fights Nazi vampires (yes, really) and other supernatural threats. That doesn’t stop them from employing Alucard, who is a vampire himself — though he’s a good guy. Or at least, the closest to a good guy we get in the series.

The anime is famous for its style and absolutely crazy plot, as well as the amount of gore and violence. Of the two series, Ultimate is considered the better one — though the first one is also worth watching.

Onihei

Where to watch: Crunchyroll, Prime

Onihei is a rather unknown series. Adapted from a series of historical novels that follow the fictionalized life of Heizou Hasegawa (an actual civil service officer in 18th century Japan), it didn’t have a very wide audience.

Not only does it require you to like historical series that are grounded in realism, but also some knowledge of the subject matter is required. Hasegawa dealt with very specific types of criminals — arsoners and robbers.

More importantly, the civil servants in these are the good guys.
