5 Manga Creators Who Are Heavily Involved in Their Anime Production

Some mangakas do not care much about the anime based on their manga, but some do, and we want to offer you a list of five mangakas invested in their anime.

Mangas are often made into anime, and that probably makes you wonder whether manga artists are involved in the production. The answer is that it depends on the mangaka and the production team. Here, we want to talk about the manga artists and writers who care about their anime. Because we care about their anime as well!

Katsuhiro Otomo

Katsuhiro Otomo was greatly involved as a manga artist with his cyberpunk anime Akira, for which he wrote a screenplay. And then he also directed the anime. To reiterate, this man created the manga and then went ahead and became the writer and director of the anime based on it. He was legitimately very invested in the story, and a lot of people liked the result based on the 8.0 score on IMDB.

Mari Okada

In a similar way, the writer of O Maidens in Your Savage Season was also a writer of the anime series. Her name is Mari Okada, and the anime did quite well with a 7.2 score on IMDB.

Rifujin Na Magonote

Rifujin Na Magonote, who wrote Mushoku Tensei, is credited as a part of the writing team, not only for the novel the 2021 anime is based on, but also for the screenplay. The anime has 8.4 points on IMDB, which is fairly strong.

Aka Akasaka

Aka Akasaka, who is famous for two mangas, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War and Oshi no Ko, reportedly was very invested in all anime based on those. Apparently, he even wrote manga with anime in mind, which meant creating pacing that would work out best in an anime, with season finales included. Both anime were critically acclaimed and have high (8.5) scores on IMDB.

Natsuki Takaya

Natsuki Takaya is a very dedicated artist who created the Fruits Basket anime. It was reported that she was much happier working on the second series because they listened to her insights. In the credits, aside from writing the manga, she was listed as an executive supervisor. She might be happy to learn that the second Fruits Basket anime (2019) is better rated on IMDB compared to the first one (2001), if only by fractions of a point (8.6 versus 7.9).

As these examples show, manga writers and artists are often very interested in the anime based on their manga. To be fair, it is not conclusive evidence that all the anime involving mangakas on this list were fairly well-received, and we cannot claim that involving mangakas is the key to success. But it does seem like simple courtesy to at least listen to what a mangaka has to say when you bring their work into a new medium.
