5 Must-Watch Anime from Studio Science Saru

5 Must-Watch Anime from Studio Science Saru

Fans are finally noticing the studio.

The recently released PV for Kimi no Iro — a new anime-original movie by Science Saru — as well as PV for Dandadan, made fans finally notice Studio Science Saru.

The studio, established by an acclaimed director and animator Masaaki Yuasa, has already done quite a few anime works — and many of them are great. You should really consider watching these 5 anime if you think you like the studio.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!

Perhaps their most important work is the anime adaptation of Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!). Following a trio of high school girls who want to create anime, the series dives deep into the details of the process of making one.

Besides obviously educating the anime fans on how animators actually work, the anime is just a solid drama with realistic characters. It’s really a must watch for multiple reasons, and the opening has become iconic.

Devilman: Crybaby

Masaaki Yuasa doesn’t always get involved with the projects of his own studio, but when he does, we get bangers like the aforementioned Eizouken — or like Devilman: Crybaby.

An adaptation of an iconic shounen manga, Crybaby takes the original and makes it even darker and more depressing. There’s beauty in it, though: the anime is highly acclaimed: it even won the “Anime of the Year” title in the Crunchyroll Anime Awards of its year.

The Heike Story

The Heike Story (Heike Monogatari) adapts a classic Japanese historical tale into a 12-episode anime… with a twist — it adds a new main character to it. Surprisingly enough, it works: if you get used to the series being a bit hard to follow due to the sheer number of characters, it’s incredibly rewarding.

An interesting bit of trivia is that The Heike Story is directed by Naoko Yamada — who is also directing Kimi no Iro. She worked at Kyoto Animation before and is one of the most beloved directors of all time.

Night Is Short, Walk on Girl

Night Is Short, Walk on Girl (Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome) adapts Tomihiko Morimi’s novel of the same name. It’s a wild tale of romance and chance meetings, showing how even small actions can heavily influence the future.

Set in the same universe as one of his other works, The Tatami Galaxy (Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei), it’s a must-watch for those who like Morimi’s works — seeing the connection between the two adds an extra layer of entertainment.

Inu-Oh

Similarly to The Heike Story, Inu-Oh is set in Japan of the distant past. It is loosely based on the real-life story of a musical performer who used the same name, but most of it is fictionalized, of course.

That doesn’t make the movie any less interesting: full of great performances and bizarre imagery, it’s a very unique experience.
