Some anime are simply staples of their genre, and here is a list of such anime for horror.
These anime are very commonly mentioned when talking about horror, which, in our opinion, makes them horror staples. We will try not to spoil much in this list.
Shiki is a serious drama and a major horror anime. It has a few moments of gore, although they are not excessive (maybe they are a little excessive by the end). But otherwise, the horror is in suspension, which the anime creates masterfully. The anime is about vampires, so be aware that there will be blood. And mind control.
Mononoke
Mononoke is an anime series that follows a man who destroys mononoke, which are spirits that exist due to negative emotions in humans. The man, whatever he is, has the knowledge of these creatures and what it takes to bring one down, and that is not just the sword. The man is only called “Medicine Seller,” and to a lot of characters it is a surprise that he would carry that sword. Either way, it is an interesting horror anime with spirit-fighting as a premise.
Junji Ito Collection
Junji Ito is well-known for his ability to cause fear. While The Collection was not exactly best-rated (6.6 on IMDB), it is still a moderately good attempt at adapting some of the most famous pieces of Junji Ito into anime. Besides, some episodes are rated better than others. And The Collection has adapted Tomie, which is a plus. Just keep in mind that these stories are both scary and, at times, provoke disgust (obviously, on purpose). Body horror is a major favorite of Junji Ito, after all.
Paranoia Agent is a psychological thriller more than horror, but it has its fair amount of horror. With the premise of a series of assaults by a boy with a bent baseball bat, the movie starts out as a simple police investigation and turns into a psychological investigation of a cast of characters.
Another
A proper ghost story, Another has a class of children cursed with deaths that might resemble Final Destination ones. Still, it is an interesting horror mystery, with some blood. It is fairly famous, has an average rating (7.5 on IMDB), and it is rather short, so binge-watching it is possible.
These spooky titles will hopefully give you an idea of what you need to have watched to be a horror anime fan. Of course, an anime being a staple does not have to be to your liking. Follow your heart when choosing what to watch.
