Anime titles are very important to fans. Sometimes, people would dismiss an anime based solely on its title or premise. With the rise of light novel adaptations, many of them adopted the approach of having a full grammatically correct sentence as a title, giving a concise description of the content. Although this practice can be criticized, sometimes anime is just not what we expect it to be, and the title is to blame.
Tada Never Falls in Love (Tada-kun wa Koi wo Shinai) is a romantic comedy from a few years ago. With the premise of the main character, Mitsuyoshi Tada, never being romantically attracted to anyone before, and that name, everyone already knew where this was going. Yes, you guessed it, he falls in love. Not very misleading, if you think of the anime as being about him coming to accept his feelings.
Voltaire once said that the Holy Roman Empire was neither Holy nor Roman, nor an Empire. While there are arguments that he was partly wrong, the point here is that some otaku say that about Happy Sugar Life as well.
It’s definitely not happy or sweet — and, given the series’ nature of following the lives of horrible people dealing with their own twisted definitions of love, it’s full of actual death. Of course, this one was entirely on purpose — many of the characters see nothing wrong with their actions.
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
This one is the fault of English localization. Bell, the protagonist, obviously doesn’t go to dungeons to pick up girls — and as such, many fans are confused why the series is titled that. Yes, it can be argued that it’s a harem anime, but that still doesn’t really match the title.
However, the original name is slightly different. “Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka” is a similar question, but the more correct translation would be “Is it wrong to look for random encounters in a dungeon”? No nonsense about picking up girls, but that doesn’t roll off the tongue as well.
Okay, perhaps this is a stretch. There’s probably not a single person who thought there’s an anime with hundreds of episodes that is about whitening fabric with chlorine. The story of Bleach’s title is rather curious, with the mangaka first wanting to name it “Black” after the color of Soul Reapers’ clothes. Thankfully, he decided that it was too generic… only for his next idea to be “White”. That also didn’t sound very good, obviously, and he decided to use “Bleach” as it’s commonly associated with the color. It might sound stupid at first, but the name ended up being iconic.
Two Car is an anime about… one bike. Talk about being absolutely misleading. Okay, that’s actually a misinterpretation of the premise, but this joke about a largely obscure racing anime keeps being passed on years after it ended. Two Car is actually about sidecar racing, so the vehicles are technically motorcycles — and the “two” in the title comes from the fact that girls are racing in pairs. While it’s hard to miss after you see the poster, the obscure nature of the anime keeps painting the wrong image of it.
