A Complete Guide: How to Watch KonoSuba in Order

You aren’t supposed to skip the movie.

Summary:

  • KonoSuba has 2 OVAs, a movie and a spin-off.
  • The movie is important, as it adapts the LN, while the OVAs and the spin-off are optional.
  • Isekai Quartet includes characters from KonoSuba, but you’d want to be familiar with the other series as well.

KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!) is currently one of the most discussed series of the Spring 2024 anime season. This might sound baffling to some, as the anime had no sequel since 2019 — the spin-off obviously doesn’t count.

That said, KonoSuba’s popularity is easily explained if you’ve ever watched it. The anime is great both as a comedy and a straightforward, lighthearted adventure series. And, if you want to get into it, there’s no better chance than now — although some might be confused over the amount of content in it.

What Else Is There Outside of the 3 Seasons?

On paper, KonoSuba’s watch order is straightforward. You have three seasons (the third is airing right now), so you can just watch them, right? Well, no, it’s actually not that simple. There’s also two OVAs, a movie and a whole spin-off series.

The OVAs — one for each season — are entirely optional, and don’t progress the story anywhere. That said, they’re still a part of the series. KonoSuba’s first two seasons are both quite short, and with the main selling point being comedy, one more episode — even one that’s not plot-important — is welcome.

Moreover, the first OVA actually introduces Yunyun before she appears in Season 2, and the second gives some background info about the world.

The movie is actually extremely important. The first two seasons adapt two volumes of the original light novel each, while the movie adapts the fifth one. The third season starts with Volume 6, so you can’t skip the movie: it’s a part of the main story.

The spin-off, KonoSuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Bakuen wo!), focuses on Megumin, arguably the most popular character in the series. It takes place before the first season, essentially being the prequel about Megumin’s days in the magical academy.

That said, watching it before S1 is not a good idea, as it assumes you have some knowledge of the world. It can be watched at any point after that, but most fans will suggest you to follow the release order and watch it after the movie.

What Is Isekai Quartet?

KonoSuba is also a part of the chibi crossover series Isekai Quartet — along with Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu), Saga of Tanya the Evil (Youjo Senki) and Overlord. The series is entirely optional, but it works best if you’re already familiar with all the series involved.

Later installments of Isekai Quartet also include The Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari) and Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious (Shinchou Yuusha: Kono Yuusha ga Ore Tueee Kuse ni Shinchou Sugiru).

You aren’t supposed to skip the movie.
