The coziest stories that happen during the coldest season.

Japanese people love Christmas, but celebrate it without any religious connotations: it's just an excuse to exchange gifts, eat cake, and admire the festive lights.

We've collected some Christmas anime to get you in the festive spirit.

1. Laid-Back Camp, 2018-2024

High school student Rin has found a new hobby: hiking alone through Japan, enjoying the scenery and spending the night in a tent by the fire. One day, Rin meets another fan of such recreation, and together they start a school club dedicated to outdoor camping.

Laid-Back Camp is an anime with almost no plot. There is no need for one, as this is a story about comfort: the big share of the running time is spent simply showing the viewer how the schoolgirls relax in nature, while at the same time explaining the peculiarities of their hobby in detail.

The frosty episodes, of which there are many, create a unique, almost Christmassy magic: often on winter nights, the girls warm themselves by the fire with a cup of hot cocoa, wrapped up in large jackets.

2. Amagami SS, 2010-2011

Just before Christmas, Junichi was heartbroken: the girl he had asked out simply didn't show up. After that, he completely ignored any hint of a romantic relationship. Time has healed him a bit, and he seems to be ready to try his luck again. But with whom?

Every four episodes are dedicated to one of Junichi's choices, i.e. one of the girls, and there are six of them. And the mention of Christmas at the very beginning is no coincidence: the new relationship unfolds on the eve of the winter holidays.

3. Tokyo Godfathers, 2003

Miyuki ran away from home and now lives on the street with two older homeless people: Gin and Hana. The strange trio finds a baby on Christmas Eve and cannot leave it unattended.

Thus begins the unusual adventures of the homeless as they try to figure out how to find the baby's parents.

Tokyo Godfathers is an unusual movie for Satoshi Kon. It is unusual in its nature: the author had created fantastic works at the intersection of reality and fiction, but Tokey Godfathers turned out to be an absolutely down-to-earth work. But not without a Christmas miracle: by trying to help each other, each of the trio will find their own way.

4. My Santa, 2005

A guy named Santa hates Christmas because he has spent it alone since he was a child. Not only that, but he was born on December 24th and was forced to spend the holiday with a cake that was too big for the little lonely Santa.

Now grown up, he is used to pretending the holiday does not exist, but this year everything is about to change. In the mall, Santa is approached by a girl who also calls herself Santa and promises to give him a Christmas he will never forget. The boy tries his best to get rid of her, but she does not leave him alone.

5. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, 2010

For a long time, Kyon lived in a strange world. He had to come to terms with the fact that his reality included aliens, psychics, and time travelers. The most surprising person he met, however, was Haruhi, whose desire to find anything unusual was so strong that it changed reality.

As Kyon settles into his new world and prepares for the Christmas party, Haruhi disappears, and with her, the oddities.

The full-length movie is a direct continuation of the series The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The Disappearance is the most Christmassy adventure of the SOS Team: in many ways, it is a retelling of the movie It's a Wonderful Life, but with the characters of The Melancholy.
