Ep.6 has Maomao discover poison in the soup meant for Gyokuyou, but eventually it is implied that the trays of food for Gyokuyou and Lishu were switched.
Fans theorize about various reasons Lishu’s food could have been switched, including her own behavior and her relationship with the emperor.
Fans are also certain that the wooden tablets from Ep. 5 are connected to this situation.
Poison Testing
During the Garden Party, Maomao’s job is to taste food for Gyokuyou, and she discovers that the soup meant for Gyokuyou was poisoned. However, she also notices that Lishu seems to have been given a dish that she was afraid to eat.
That leads her and fans to believe that there were two cases of trickery; the poison must have been meant for Lishu, but someone else swapped trays for Lishu and Gyokuyou, so that Lishu had to eat food she didn’t like. After all, we are shown maids complaining that Lishu is a picky eater; perhaps, they wanted to teach her a lesson without knowing that Lishu’s allergies were quite serious.
It is not clear yet if this theory is correct, but fans have some ideas as to why Lishu might have been the real target of the poisoning.
Why Poison Lishu?
Lishu, as Maomao learns in the episode, used to be a concubine of the previous emperor. Some fans believe that it could be reason enough to poison her because, as far as we know, relationships between a former emperor’s concubine and the current emperor were frowned upon. In other words, Lishu being married to the current emperor was in bad taste, which could have been the reason.
Fans also note that Lishu didn't seem to be very good at being a concubine. She wears a risque color, too close to that of Gyokuyou, and she seems to be charmed by Jinshi, which means that she could have made someone angry with her own behavior. Even though she is only 14, fans admit that not everybody would be understanding of the mistakes of such a young girl within the inner palace.
Finally, Jinshi is certain that the assassination attempt is connected to the wooden tablets from Episode 5. The mystery is not solved yet, but fans are quite sure that the trays were switched and that Lishu was the intended victim, who only survived due to someone wanting to make her eat fish.
Since Episode 6, fans have gathered that Lishu was probably the intended victim of the poison. But why?
