Ancient Magus' Bride: Why Resurrecting Philomela's Parents May Go Very Wrong

As Philomela hopes to be soon reunited with her parents, wanting for nothing more than praise, fans feel chilly at the thought that the resurrection may not go well.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride (Mahou Tsukai no Yome) spoilers ahead!

Summary

  • In Ep.7, Philomela leaves the College and brings the book to her Grandmother in hopes of soon reuniting with her parents, who died a while ago.
  • Usually in anime and other media, the revived comes back wrong.
  • Philomela’s grandmother is used to doing the forbidden, so she will try anyway.
  • Philomela’s only wish to see her parents is even more heartbreaking as fans wait for whatever the grandmother manages to revive.

Even now that we know that Philomela was the energy thief, collecting more and more magical power to revive her parents, we cannot feel anything but sympathy for her. The book warped her into something unrecognizable, and she is literally falling apart as she brings the book to her grandmother. But even that is not enough for the grandmother to praise her. Nothing would ever be, even though Philomela was crucial to the grandmother’s plans.

Reviving the Dead

It’s an old trope that reviving the dead is dangerous. Fans immediately think of Fullmetal Alchemist, but that idea exists outside of anime as well. For example, Stephen King played the trope of “coming back wrong” in his works, especially with Pet Sematary. Most fans who have been exposed to any media know that bringing someone back from the dead is dangerous and usually is not worth it. That is why fans are especially worried about what Philomela’s grandmother is about to do.

The Grandmother

Philomela’s grandmother seems to have been doing things that are taboo, including experimentation on sentient creatures, for a long time. She believes that she can bring back her son (it’s not so clear if she wants to return his wife), and she is going to try. The book, after all, is meant to revive the dead. But the grandmother still made sure that the dirty work was done by someone else, namely Philomela.

Philomela

Philomela was used by the grandmother in the worst possible way. We don’t doubt that the idea of the energy theft belonged to the grandmother and that she deliberately made Philomela collect the energy, especially since it was a dangerous activity, one that warped Philomela completely.

It appears that Philomela will die soon, too, which makes her story especially tragic. All she ever wanted was to see her parents again and maybe be praised for her sacrifices. Even though fans look forward to seeing what will be revived with morbid curiosity, Philomela’s wish makes it all the more heartbreaking if her father comes back wrong.
