Anime Dominates 6th Annual Global Demand Awards — Jujutsu Kaisen Fans Will Be Happy About Results

Attack on Titan and One Piece appear as runner-ups.

Summary:

  • In the 6th Annual Global Demand Awards, Jujutsu Kaisen won the Most In-Demand TV Show award.
  • This victory, as well as the number of other anime nominations, indicates that anime has become mainstream nowadays.
  • Despite that, not a single anime movie won any awards in any of the film categories.

Global Demand Awards, hosted yearly by Parrot Analytics, measure how successful the new (and not-so-new) series and movies are with the global audiences. This year, it seems like anime is getting more popular than ever — or at least, that’s what the stats say.

Jujutsu Kaisen wins the award

Jujutsu Kaisen wins the award for Most In-Demand Anime Series — and, more importantly, Most In-Demand TV Show. Considering how hyped up the second season was, and how popular it got with the general audience, it isn’t surprising in retrospect. That said, older otaku still find it somewhat baffling that anime has become this mainstream nowadays.

This isn’t just limited to Jujutsu Kaisen. Out of 5 nominees for the TV Show category, 3 were anime: the other two are One Piece and Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin). Both are extremely popular series that have many fans all around the world, although it seems that neither could beat the new hotness that Jujutsu Kaisen is.

Some otaku feel like One Piece or Attack on Titan would be better winners. That said, it might be hard for newer viewers to get into One Piece these days: the anime is over a thousand episodes long even without the movies and specials.

And Attack on Titan was practically over in 2023, only releasing two specials — not even a full season. With how controversial the ending was, it’s understandable why the hype has died out.

Anime is mainstream now

The general popularity of anime means a lot of things. One day, it was considered a nerdy hobby, and now, anime series sweep over the world. In particular, the aforementioned three series can be considered at least partly responsible for this effect due to their general accessibility and wide appeal.

There’s one more category where anime won an award — and that’s Most In-Demand Legacy Series of 2023. It refers to a series that didn’t release any new episodes in 2023, and it was won by Dragon Ball Z. Despite the franchise being 40 years long, it still has a lot of dedicated fans — and seems to be getting even more.

General public still prefers live-action movies

Curiously enough, not a single anime movie won anything in the film categories. While anime series are virtually mainstream now, it seems that the general public still prefers live-action movies to them.

While it can be attributed to a lack of relevant anime movie releases in 2023 — the only one to actually go mainstream was Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron (Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru ka) — it still seems like fans prefer to watch anime in multi-episode format
