What does anime need to stand out and become popular? Of course, good animation, beautiful visuals, interesting direction and an exciting plot. However, a well-developed world plays an equally important role. If the world is diverse, it is interesting to watch and learn new details along with the characters.
Nowadays, it is very easy to find titles where worldbuilding plays a big role. But besides being interesting, they are often very dangerous. The fantastical world of Fairy Tail, despite all the difficulties, can hardly be compared to the world of Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin), Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba), or Jujutsu Kaisen. But if you had to choose between these three popular franchises, which world is harder to survive in?
The strongest will survive
These worlds have their own systems and peculiarities. Heroes must become stronger to face all difficulties. In Demon Slayer, the enemies are demons, in Attack on Titan – titans, and in Jujutsu Kaisen – cursed spirits. There is a hierarchy within each of these groups. In Jujutsu Kaisen, the usual level 4, 3, 2, or 1 cursed spirits are distinguished from those with a special rank. In Attack on Titan, there are the weakest small titans, as well as giant titans endowed with intelligence. In Demon Slayer, the higher-ranked demons have the Upper Moon status, but there aren't many of them. These worlds are mostly inhabited by lower-class creatures, but even after meeting them, an ordinary man can hardly survive.
Characters in these anime undergo complex training that can cost them their lives. Special organizations are created to resist the villains. In Attack on Titan, there are three corps that protect the lives of commoners and nobles and conduct research outside the walls. In Demon Slayer, it's an organization of hunters led by elite Hashira fighters. In Jujutsu Kaisen, it is a group of sorcerers around secret academies where new specialists are trained.
More suffering
All of these worlds seem to be very harsh. For ordinary people who can't defend themselves, it's very hard to survive. That's why the protagonists often start their journey with casualties. Eren loses his mother, Tanjirou loses his entire family. Yuji is an exception, but he also faces a destructive force that almost kills his friends.
Compared to the rest of the anime, the world of Jujutsu Kaisen seems less dangerous. The events do not take place in the improvised Middle Ages, but in the modern world. Even though the creators keep warning us – dozens of people die every day due to cursed spirits.
In Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer, the arrival of enemies is accompanied by massive casualties. Whole towns and villages are destroyed. Although all the danger in Attack on Titan is centered around Paradis Island – the titans only dwell there. Demon Slayer is notable for its very complex progression system. Even if characters wish to become skilled demon fighters, they must pass a difficult test in which most candidates die. In Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen, characters choose their own fate, and are not immediately thrown into a challenging trial.
Still, it's hard to say which world is scarier. Ordinary people will have a hard time in each of them. But someone can only be attracted by those difficulties.
