Beginner's Guide to Godzilla Anime on Netflix: Which One to Start With?

You actually don't need to watch anything else to start either of them.

Summary:

  • There is a Godzilla movie trilogy on Netflix, and there's Godzilla Singular Point.
  • They are very different from each other and are virtually unrelated.
  • Both are worth watching, but they appeal to different audiences.

Netflix has a huge catalog of anime. In it, you can find both international hits and things you've never heard of before. In fact, Netflix even has anime based on live-action movies. One of those examples is Godzilla — pretty much everyone is familiar with this giant monster and the franchise in some way.

However, the weird thing about Godzilla on Netflix is that there are 4 anime about it (to be fair, the movies are related). So, what's the deal with them, and what's the actual watch order?

Godzilla Movie Trilogy

First of all, three of the Godzilla anime on Netflix are actually related. Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (Godzilla 1: Kaijuu Wakusei), Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle (Godzilla 2: Kessen Kidou Zoushoku Toshi) and Godzilla: The Planet Eater (Godzilla 3: Hoshi wo Kuu Mono) are a trilogy of movies that should be watched in that exact order.

These are fine to watch even if you haven't seen anything Godzilla-related before. However, they are quite different from epic kaiju movies if you expect something like that.

After all, one of the original creators of the trilogy is Gen Urobuchi, nicknamed "Urobutcher" by fans. His stories tend to feature a lot of darkness and tragedy — Fate/Zero and Psycho-Pass are such examples.

While they were met with mixed receptions by fans — some found the drama too contrived — the CGI action scenes in the movies are solid. If you want to see good 3D animation, these might be a good watch.

Singular Point

The other Godzilla anime on Netflix is Godzilla Singular Point (Godzilla: S.P), which is far less popular among otaku. This anime is a collaboration between Bones and Orange — two studios that have many fans. It's also unrelated to any other part of the franchise, including the two aforementioned movies.

The reason why Singular Point is less popular is because it's not really an action anime. It has some fights (although not many), but overall, it's a complex sci-fi mystery anime with time travel elements.

It appeals to a completely different crowd, and that crowd might be turned off after seeing Godzilla in the name — because they'd assume it's just an anime about fights and monsters.

Both Are Good in Their Own Regards

Overall, both Godzilla series on Netflix — the movie trilogy and Singular Point — are worth watching. They both appeal to different audiences, though. If you want a tragedy with some good 3D action, watch the movies, and if you want a dialogue-driven sci-fi mystery, watch Singular Point.

You actually don't need to watch anything else to start either of them.
