Bleach Delayed Episodes 49 and 50. Also Known as 415 and 416.

The final two episodes of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War have been delayed to the late-night slots of 19 and 26 October — which, under Japanese broadcast convention, means they air at midnight on the 20th and 27th. Both dates are correct. Most outlets have picked one without saying which.

The production's stated reason is quality: wanting to improve the episodes as the series reaches its climax and deliver the work in the best possible form. Episode 48 aired on 12 September, so the audience hit the wall mid-arc, five weeks from an ending twenty years in the making.

This is a delay. It is not a cancellation, and the franchise is not finishing — a new mobile game with two Tite Kubo-designed characters and a Kubo-worked scenario picking up immediately after this arc was shown in July.

Four numbering systems, one episode

Here is where reporting this becomes genuinely difficult, because Bleach is counted four different ways simultaneously and all four are in active use:

• The adaptation's own count, 1 to 50. The delayed pair are episodes 49 and 50. This is what the official announcement uses. There is also a recap special numbered 21.5
• The per-cour count. The 12 September episode is Part 4, Episode 8; the delayed pair are Part 4 episodes 9 and 10
• The continuous count inherited from the 2004 series, in which this adaptation begins at episode 367 and ends at 416, with a recap special at 387.5
• The part boundaries within that continuous count: Part 1 runs 367 to 379, Part 2 380 to 392, Part 3 393 to 406, Part 4 407 to 416

So episode 50, Part 4 episode 10, and episode 416 are the same broadcast. And the 12 September episode is simultaneously 48, Part 4 episode 8, and 414.

Which produces a specific, checkable trap. Reference pages currently end their episode tables at the last aired instalment, so an automated read returns "final episode: 414." That is episode 48. The finale is 416. Anyone eyeballing a table this month will get this wrong by two.

The cours are not the same length, either

The other assumption worth killing is that each part runs thirteen episodes. They do not:

• Part 1, The Blood Warfare — 13
• Part 2, The Separation — 13
• Part 3, The Conflict — 14
• Part 4, The Calamity — 10

Fifty in total. The final part is the shortest by four episodes, which is its own small piece of information about how the adaptation budgeted its ending — and which vanishes entirely if you assume uniform cours.

The system nobody at the studio uses

The most interesting thing about the continuous 367-to-416 numbering is that it appears to be a fan and reference-work construction rather than anything the production, the studio or the official site employs in its own materials.

It exists because the 2004 series stopped at 366 and this one resumed the same story eighteen years later, and somebody needed a way to express the relationship between them. So the community built a numbering the rights-holders never asked for, it became the default on every reference page, and now international coverage routinely cites episode numbers that appear nowhere in any official document.

Which is a very Bleach problem. A series that spent its entire run on the question of how many names one thing can have ends with its own episodes carrying four.
