Bloodier but More Cohesive: Differences between Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate

It is a well-known fact that music is better in Hellsing and plot is better in Hellsing Ultimate. But what else is different?

It is an established fact in the fandom that both Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate are worth a watch. However, if you want to choose one, you probably need a list of differences between the two. So here we go!

Plot

We cannot avoid mentioning the plot. It is THE difference between the two series. The first series diverges from the manga right in the middle; Hellsing Ultimate goes the manga way. If you read the manga or just want a manga-honoring experience, you should watch Hellsing Ultimate. But if you want a slightly different (though not very coherent) plot, the original series has you covered.

Animation

Animation between the series is not very that much different, but there are differences, and it would be wrong to claim that the second series is not animated better. There are still some scenes that could use some work, but overall the 2001 series is at a disadvantage when it comes to animation.

That said, if you don't like blood, excessive blood, all blood all the time, please do not touch Hellsing Ultimate. In Hellsing, they tried to censor the blood by making ghouls and vampires turn to dust when killed. In Hellsing Ultimate, they had no reservations, and the amount of blood, both from vampires and humans is astounding.

The character designs are similar in both anime. However, one could argue that at least an attempt was made in the first series to make Victoria Seras look like she can find clothes suitable for different occasions, such as the battlefield.

In other words, while she does wear the uniform with stockings, in the first episode, she wears something much more sensible for a police girl. The fanservice still appears in the first Hellsing series, but at least it appears once Seras is sufficiently invulnerable and can take a blessed blade to any part of her body.

Soundtrack

As it is well-known among Hellsing fans, the one thing the second Hellsing did not manage to do was to produce a better soundtrack than the original series. It might be an unfair competition; the original Hellsing's soundtrack was exceptional, after all. Still, if you want to know why all of us love the soundtrack so much, go ahead, watch the original Hellsing. Or just listen to the music if you prefer, but experiencing it with the twists and turns of the anime is worth a shot.

Both anime versions have their advantages and disadvantages, and it is good to have a choice, especially when the options do indeed differ in many ways that matter.
