The beginning of Blue Exorcist Season 3 wasn't particularly good, but Episode 3 improved things considerably and many viewers are eagerly awaiting the continuation of the story.

Even though Studio VOLN has managed to fix most of the weaknesses of the first episodes, such as pacing and plot holes, there is still one element that has been a major disappointment since the first season, and that is the love triangle between Rin, Yukio and Shiemi.

Love in Blue Exorcist

Blue Exorcist is a shonen, and as is often the case in this genre, there is no special emphasis on love. The anime doesn't even have a full-fledged love story, except for the one involving the mother of the main characters.

Although Rin and Yukio are teenagers, the creators talk more about friendship or the importance of family bonds than about romantic relationships. However, the theme of growing up and sexual maturation is still present — Rin often tries to get the attention of his peers, while Yukio is shy of the opposite sex.

There are no serious love lines in Blue Exorcist, but there is a comical love triangle between the main characters and their friend Shiemi. The girl is a very important character and appears in the story almost immediately.

She is a close friend of the main characters, as well as Rin's classmate and Yukio's student. Her attitude towards any of the brothers can hardly be called a true love affair, but rather a friendly affection.

Moreover, Shiemi is made to be too kind and even sweet, so that she treats all the heroes well. Rin and Yukio are very dear to Shiemi, as they were her first friends and the first people she really started to socialize with.

Rin or Yukio?

Episode 3 reminded viewers of an unpopular trope in the anime. Rin wanted to invite Shiemi to the festival, but the girl was very concerned about Yukio's condition, so she decided to ask him. That resulted in a typical situation — no one went with anyone, but in the end we were shown the averaging decision as the characters danced together in a circle.

Many viewers found this choice naive and annoying. However, it generally fits with what we've seen before — Shiemi did not favor any of the brothers, even in the improvised finale of the first season.

Love triangles cause a lot of negativity on their own, but considering the criticism surrounding many of the characters, especially Yukio, it's not surprising that the love triangle in Blue Exorcist is so unpopular.
