Blue Exorcist Season 3 is Rumored to Be 3 (Split) Cours Long: What That Might Mean for the Series

Blue Exorcist Season 3 is Rumored to Be 3 (Split) Cours Long: What That Might Mean for the Series

Maybe the anime is going to catch up to the manga?

Summary:

  • Blue Exorcist fell out of popularity, but the sudden announcement of S3 revived fans’ hype.
  • The Shimane Illuminati arc is only 15 chapters long, which is not enough content for one cour of anime.
  • However, the major arc between S2 and Shimane Illuminati arc seems to be a part of S3 as well, giving hope for more content in the future.

According to a yet unconfirmed leak, the third season of Blue Exorcist is going to air for 3 cours — although not consecutively. The fans’ interest in the anime has been rekindled after over half a decade of no new content, and this might be just what they want. However, there’s a number of concerns as well.

A sudden revival of interest

The announcement for a Blue Exorcist sequel came out of nowhere. With the first season being basically half-anime original, the second one didn’t continue from where the viewers expected it to — and despite being a more or less faithful adaptation, was met with less than stellar reception. The first season slightly fell out of public favor as well, criticized for its comedic timing, and the series quickly was forgotten by most otaku.

Yet when a new season was announced, fans were excited once again. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and bringing back a once beloved show plays on exactly that notion — even if the show is not as popular anymore.

How long is the arc that S3 will cover?

The third season, Shimane Illuminati Saga, is going to adapt the manga arc by the same name. While it is one of the most popular arcs among manga readers, it is only 15 chapters long. For comparison, the Kyoto Impure King arc was 19 chapters — and it was adapted into a 12 episode season. While there are no confirmations for the leak mentioned above, the TV schedule lists at least 12 episodes for the third season of Blue Exorcist — and this might sound like the plot of the arc would be stretched too much.

There’s actually more content in the manga

Between the Kyoto Impure King arc and the Shimane Illuminati arc, there are two more arcs that were not adapted into anime yet. The Terror of the Kraken arc is a mini-arc with only 3 chapters, continuing right where the second season stopped. And after it, there’s the Academy Seven Wonders arc — which is crucial to the story, and the anime skipping it would be concerning, to say the least.

However, the promotional materials showed moments from that arc being animated as a part of the third season — it seems that despite being named Shimane Illuminati Saga, it would focus on more than just the arc by the same name. This gives hope to fans — and together, these arcs are long enough to require more than one cour of animated content. Maybe there’s some truth to the leak — and even if there isn’t, the manga has over 100 chapters at this point. With the interest in it being suddenly revived, we might get a couple more Blue Exorcist anime seasons in the future.
