Bocchi the Rock is So Consistent at Being Great It Might Just Be Perfect

It is incredibly rare for a CGDCT show to get so much praise from otaku.

Summary:

  • Bocchi the Rock! is perhaps the most popular music-related modern anime.
  • The story and characters are great, and the production is almost miraculously amazing.
  • With no visible weaknesses, consistent throughout the entire run, Bocchi may be considered perfect..

Bocchi the Rock! came out just a year ago — and captivated the hearts of otaku all around the world. With two compilation movies set to release in 2024, it is perhaps one of the most popular music-related anime of the modern era. Normally, “cute girls doing cute things” (CGDCT) anime are more of a niche thing, however, Bocchi is one of the exceptions. There is an explanation for this: it is so consistently great in all its aspects it might as well be considered perfect.

Characters and story are consistently great

One of the main reasons Bocchi is so popular is how relatable it is. With social anxiety being more widespread than ever, Bocchi herself can be a very relatable protagonist for the viewers. Many people also relate to Ryou’s coolheaded demeanor, and the other two main cast members contribute to the show as well. Overall, it’s just a well-working cast, and the show is about them doing what they love, which is always just pleasant to watch. The show itself is also full of references to the Japanese music industry, most notably, ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION, an incredibly popular rock band. It is consistently entertaining and easy to watch for all its 12 episodes.

It is incredibly well-produced

Production-wise, Bocchi the Rock! is nothing short of a miracle. While CloverWorks anime tend to receive better animation than your average seasonal, this one truly goes above and beyond. That kind of fluid animation, exceptional for a CGDCT show (which usually don’t have many incredible sakuga moments), is yet another selling point of the show, as it looks consistently good throughout the entire run. The anime also gets praised for its voice acting and music.

With not a single bad episode, consistently fun comedic moments and a heartfelt message about music, Bocchi the Rock! is an example of a show that does everything right. It may not be necessarily the best at anything it does, and it certainly doesn’t have the hype action moments some otaku want from their anime; however, being consistently great in every aspect is a strength of itself. Created by a passionate team of industry veterans, and being an ode to passion and music itself, it certainly deserves its acclaim and popularity. After all, perhaps a perfect show is exactly one that has no visible weaknesses, staying consistently great in every episode. So yeah, you might as well call Bocchi perfect.
