Book Of The Atlantic: What We Liked And Didn't Like About It

Shall we take a closer look at the Black Butler Movie?

Book of the Atlantic movie spoilers ahead!

Since the Black Butler fandom is currently waking up due to the announcement of a long-awaited anime sequel, there is an excellent reason to discuss some of the previous adaptations. And we believe Book of the Atlantic movie is a great choice for that.

The story of the movie brings Ciel and Sebastian onto a luxury liner where they have to solve the mystery of people coming back to life. Titanic-like ship, secrets that need to be uncovered, zombies, marvelous action and more depth to Ciel and Sebastian's story. Sounds exciting, doesn't it?

Book of the Atlantic received mostly positive feedback from the fans. They say the movie stuck to the manga, was entertaining and had great visuals. But let's start with some things fans deem disadvantaged of the movie because it's always nice to finish on a positive note, don't you think?

The first thing you think of when you hear about a huge and luxurious liner sinking is Titanic.

It doesn't look like a simple coincidence, Yana Toboso was definitely inspired by this story, and the fact that Book of the Atlantic ship is called Carpathia (the ship famous for saving the survivors of Titanic) also points at that.

However, not all fans appreciated the reference, some think the similarities to that story made the Black Butler movie less interesting.

Zombies also received some criticism but the reasons for that were quite subjective: some fans just don't like this supernatural theme. Finally, some characters didn't exactly become lovable by the fans: they mention Rian being not so interesting and Aleister just annoying the hell out of them. But let's skip to the good bit: the things fans loved about the adaptation.

First of all, fans mention Lizzy. She's a character we don't know much about, so it was really great to learn more about her. The sword master reveal was exciting and the fight scene made fans go "wow!" Lizzy finally got her moment to shine, and it was beautiful.

Speaking of reveals, we can't forget to mention the Undertaker. Although fans call this plot twist quite obvious, they can't help feeling happy to see him and add that this story part was chef's kiss.

The best part of Book of the Atlantic, however, is the flashback of Sebastian and Ciel. We are finally shown the origin of their contract and the beginning of their relationship and bond. After all, Black Butler has always been not only about demons, mysteries and trauma but about these two becoming a family, a sick and twisted one, but a family indeed.
