Chainsaw Man Characters Don’t Understand the Conditions of Denji’s Contract With Pochita

He doesn’t have to live a normal life to fulfill the contract.

Summary:

  • Denji and Pochita formed a Devil Contract.
  • Pochita gave Denji its heart in exchange for seeing the man’s dreams.
  • A number of Chainsaw Man characters misinterpret the terms of the contract.

Chainsaw Man devils are truly mysterious creatures that can be discussed for ages. And one of the most curious things about them is their ability to make contracts with humans.

A contract can be made exclusively between a devil and a human. Since it’s a contract, it’s fair to suggest that one party provides a certain thing, and another one is giving something in return.

The Contract Between Denji And Pochita

Although most contracts are based on a painful sacrifice, such as giving parts of one’s body to a devil in order to use their abilities when needed, Denji and Pochita’s one is a little bit different.

When the yakuza betrayed Denji and almost killed him, the man made a deal with Pochita. The devil promised to give Denji his heart and give him another chance to live a life in exchange for showing him his dreams.

Pochita always loved listening to Denji’s dreams, they fascinated him, and the devil wanted him to live a normal life and die a normal death. But this “normal life” was never the condition of the contract, it was the dreams part instead.

No One Understands the Terms

In one of the recent chapters (Chapter 165), Fami is talking to Denji about his contract with Pochita. She says that the terms of their contract require Denji to live a normal life. He doesn’t argue with that, but fans think that this is a misconception about the contract.

Living a normal life is probably out of the question for Denji now, so if this was indeed the condition for the contract, then it’s practically impossible to fulfill it.

It’s also the same mistake that Makima made in Part I of the manga. The Horsemen and other Chainsaw Man characters misinterpret the terms for Denji’s contract with Pochita, and cannot understand the truth.

Living a normal life was always out of the question. Pochita wanted Denji to have it, but it feels that he knew that it was hard to achieve. That’s why he just wanted to see Denji’s dreams instead.

We don’t know whether Denji didn’t correct Fami deliberately, but fans think it might be foreshadowing. Makima was the one to make the same mistake in the past, and we know that it didn’t end well for her. Does the same fate await Fami now, too?
