Denji is one of the most realistic main characters out there.
Summary:
Chainsaw Man doesn’t seem like something that would be popular from the premise alone.
Despite his seemingly dumb motivation, Denji is a surprisingly complex character.
Other characters in the series are great as well.
The premise of Chainsaw Man seems a bit too ridiculous for the anime to actually work — or at least, too ridiculous for it to become as popular as it is.
It being a hit, however, was already expected, especially with how beloved the manga was even before getting an adaptation. This might sound baffling, but it makes perfect sense when you realize how good the series is at making you care about the characters.
Denji is a great main character
While Denji’s dream is often simplified by fans (and even by Denji himself) as “touch boobs”, it’s actually more complicated than that. Denji is starved for human contact, both physical and emotional.
He essentially never had a normal childhood or teenage years, being forced to deal with his father’s debt. Denji might be a simple person who can’t properly put his issues into words, but his motivation is completely understandable.
With how disconnected many people feel from society nowadays — with some even having no friends in real life, only online — it’s understandable why they might relate to Denji’s problems.
The popularization of the internet and the COVID-19 pandemic made real-life relationships harder than ever, and Chainsaw Man came out at a perfect time to address that.
Other characters are solid as well
It’s not like Denji is the only interesting character in the series, however. Makima is an incredibly complex character who has been a source of speculations and theories for a long time. Arguably, though, she’s not that interesting in the anime: while she is certainly mysterious, she doesn’t get much development until later in the manga.
Power is another fan favorite character in the series. Despite being initially introduced as unlikable and antagonistic, she has progressed over the course of the anime. Her backstory and motivation are also surprisingly realistic, even if you don’t necessarily like her.
Hayakawa is a great deuteragonist who also plays a role of a counterpart to Denji. Denji is confused and lost in life, while Hayakawa appears stoic and mature. However, he’s actually all but that, which adds extra depth to his character.
Great anime with many strengths
Overall, Chainsaw Man combines a ridiculous but simple premise with epic action and great character writing. The anime adaptation improves on that, adding amazing animation and cinematographic direction.
However, the greatest strength of the anime remains the fact that the characters are very easy to relate to
