Fans are absolutely in love with the latest chibi-Jinshi they got from The Apothecary Diaries, while remembering similar scenes in The Ancient Magus' Bride.
Chibi is meant to be a caricature style, and using it for comedy makes sense.
Both The Apothecary Diaries and The Ancient Magus' Bride use chibi characters for funny moments.
Chibi visuals are cute and funny on their own, but when used in the right context, they can create comedy gold.
Chibi Characters
Chibi is a Japanese approach to caricatures, so it comes as no surprise that The Apothecary Diaries and The Ancient Magus' Bride use them for comedy. However, not all chibi scenes are created equally. Sometimes they are put in places that are not that funny, which makes them less impactful.
The Ancient Magus' Bride
The Ancient Magus' Bride does not use a lot of chibi scenes in the second season, which makes sense since most of it is not exactly humorous. However, in Episode 6 of the First Part of Season 2, there is a small scene that uses chibi characters. It happens when Alice tells Elias that she wants to borrow Chise from him.
The moment is not spoiled by the chibi scene, but it does not offer a lot in terms of humor. It is fine, but it does not punch you in the gut with how funny it is. That is a chibi scene that is not exceptionally effective. Though we still find it very cute.
The Apothecary Diaries
The Apothecary Diaries also uses chibi characters, especially for Maomao. Sometimes she even gets cat ears and a tail for extra cuteness. However, the moment that has everybody talking about chibi scenes happens at the end of Episode 8, after Maomao tells Jinshi that she gave another man “a night of blissful dreams.”
Jinshi is floored and devastated, and his chibi expression makes people laugh as they know Jinshi’s reaction is due to a misunderstanding. This use of a chibi scene is considered very effective, especially by the fans who laughed out loud at poor Jinshi.
Chibi scenes can be cute and funny, or they can just be there without any significant emotional impact. We do not expect The Ancient Magus' Bride to be humorous anytime soon given the horrible things that are happening to the main and side characters there right now. But we do hope to see more chibi Maomao, especially if she manages to clear up their misunderstandings with Jinshi.
