Chimera’s memories, in particular, are very suspicious, even though they are not definitive proof.
Berserk of Gluttony (Boushoku no Berserk) spoilers ahead! Human experimentation is also mentioned.
Summary
In Ep.8, Fate and Myne manage to kill a Chimera.
Chimera’s memories and its appearance imply that a technologically advanced world created it.
It could mean that the world of Berserk of Gluttony survived an apocalypse. Some fans support this theory.
Ep.5 features a laboratory that might cast doubt on this theory.
Chimera
Chimera is a powerful creature in Berserk of Gluttony. In fact, it is almost impossible to destroy! Only a person with the sin skill of Gluttony can kill it by consuming its soul. Otherwise, Chimera will continue to heal and evolve. And as fans have noticed, Chimera is very reminiscent of mechas.
Memories
After killing the Chimera, Fate sees its memories and realizes that Chimera is a result of experimenting on children with sin skills. That, along with the mecha-like appearance of Chimera, led fans to believe that Chimeras are the product of a very technologically advanced community. After all, the Chimera does look hi-tech!
Surviving an Apocalypse?
Fate and Myne find the Chimera in the ruins of a civilization. And Berserk of Gluttony itself seems to be set in a world that is not very technologically advanced. For example, despite needing to defend themselves from monsters, people still use swords and bows and other primitive weapons. It is true that their magical abilities can make those weapons very powerful, but Berserk of Gluttony doesn’t look like a hi-tech environment.
It seems that Chimera was created before some sort of cataclysm destroyed a civilization capable of creating Chimeras. Fans believe that it is a strong indication that Berserk of Gluttony’s world is post-apocalyptic, with the new civilization still developing its technology.
That said, in Episode 5, we are shown quite a modern-looking laboratory. Inside, two women in lab coats try to figure out the identity of the “Corpse” who has been killing goblins near the city. They do not seem to have computers yet, but their equipment is quite impressive. The lab definitely has a more modern look than the rest of the city.
It doesn’t mean that Chimeras are not a relic of a world before an apocalypse. But it does show that despite the medieval feel, Berserk of Gluttony is not necessarily set in medieval times. So let’s wait and see, if the post-apocalyptic world theory turns out to be true.
