On October 4, the adaptation of the popular manga Dandadan was released. Dandadan is a mixture of comedy, action and romance. According to the plot, two teenagers discover that both aliens and ghosts actually exist.
The anime was created by Science SARU, a studio known for the series Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken. Dandadan is already one of the best anime of 2024, and here is why.
1. The Show Is Based on Urban Legends and Myths
The author of the manga, Yukinobu Tatsu, gets most of his bright ideas from pop culture. The concept of Dandadan itself came to the author after watching the horror movie Sadako vs. Kayako – a crossover of The Ring and The Grudge franchises.
Dandadan mixes images of vengeful spirits from Shintoism, the mysteries of the Egyptian pyramids and Sumerians, as well as urban legends. There are even references to the creepypastas of the 2000s and stories about kaiju and giant robots.
2. The Anime Is Great Directed and Animated
The Dandadan manga was lucky with its adaptation. It was entrusted to director Fuga Yamashiro and the Science SARU studio. Masaaki Yuasa founded the studio in order to develop his experimental and recognizable style more freely. Thanks to this, Science SARU can be called one of the most unique studios today.
Dandadan was the first project with Fuga Yamashiro as the main director. Therefore, the director approached the work with special care. He came up with a color and technical division between aliens and ghosts. The aliens are made in 3D, and the ghosts are hand-drawn.
And in the battle scenes with ghosts or aliens, the palette is significantly different from the everyday episodes. Yamashiro gave each group of characters their own color: cold, blue tones for aliens and warm, orange and red tones for ghosts.
3. This Is a Fun and Dynamic Title
The whole twist happens within the first episode. The story starts off fast and then keeps up the pace. The characters are constantly being attacked by someone, they are always chasing someone or looking for something.
At the same time, the tasks of Ken and Momo and their enemies are mostly absurd. One of the most important secondary characters in the series is the ghost of Turbo Granny. Later, Turbo Granny is defeated and trapped in a ceramic cat figurine, Maneki Neko. And she starts to help the main characters.
4. It's an Interesting Mix of Genres
Upon closer inspection, Dandadan turns out not to be a heroic action title like Naruto or Jujutsu Kaisen, but a romantic comedy. From the very first episodes, there is a spark between Momo and Ken, and as the story progresses, their connection becomes stronger.
It is the relationship between Ken and Momo that becomes the central motif of the entire work. And the battles with aliens and ghosts are just a bright background.
In order to achieve authenticity in the portrayal of school love, the author of the manga read a hundred romantic stories. That is why even everyday moments in the series are so fascinating to watch.
You just can't miss this one.
